"Warning from non-existent Bitdefender?"
Thu Mar-29-18 07:19 PM by makaiguy

A few days ago I received the following popup when rebooting my Win10 computer:

The only thing is, I don't have Bitdefender installed on the computer and can't recall ever having installed it. I suppose it may have been some of the bloatware I removed from the computer when I bought it, but it's long enough ago, I don't remember. Bitdefender doesn't show in Windows Programs and Features, and a regedit search for bitdefender comes up empty.

Since as far as I can tell I have no Bitdefender running, I distrusted the information in the popup. The .dmp file did exist but I did not open it and deleted the containing c:\windows\temp\4a2c... folder.

Next bootup I got a similar message, with a different, but similar apparently autogenerated folder name in c\windows\temp\.

Windows Defender and Malwarebytes scans are clean.

Any suggestions as to what is creating these files and resulting popups when I reboot? And if Bitdefender is really doing this, where should I look for it?

There are quite a few google entries about this:

Thanks. I normally do a better job of googling than that.

Reading some of the links found by google, it sounds like quite a few different security products use Bitdefender technology. I did recently install and run a scan with one of them, Adaware, so that's probably where this came from.

Reading on, it sounds like Adaware has gone down in favor over the last few years, so I just un-installed it. We'll see what happens next time I reboot.

Just wondering, I was cleaning up a Win 7 computer and did. The result was your error message. Spybot S&D has turned into garbage not one of the reliable go to clean up programs I used to use. Microsoft security Essentials must use Bit Defender components. I spent some time undoing the errors it caused including wiping out Gmail information.

Forced a reboot this morning to test this. No Bitdefender popup appeared.
