"Internet speed"
Thu May-03-18 02:10 AM by bobbo

I recently upgraded my modem to one recommended by Comcast, purchased from Amazon. At about the same time I did an update of my Win 10 system.
Currently, I am experiencing slow internet speeds, and wondering if the modem/router combo is working up to capacity. Here are the Xfinity speed test results: 11.54 Mbps download, 12.00 Mbps upload. These speeds seem too slow.

What speed are you paying Comcast for? I upgraded like 3 weeks ago to Win 10 1803 before it was officially released and my speeds went from 60MB to 5MB. I finally restored an image back to 1709. What update was it you did? Was it the one to build 1803?

I find that I'm using version 1709 I'm thinking that the new modem/router may be at fault.

I am running 50 Mbps Download, 12 Mbps thru an ac line converter from the modem. Close to 75 Mbps at modem on a laptop directly connected.
This is with Comcast using my personal modem(Motorola/Arris Surfboard SBG 6782).

Still no progress in upping my internet speed. I have a Rosewill USB receiver connected to the modem/router which is several years old. Could that be the cause? Recommendations?

BTW: My previous modem with separate router attached was faster than my current one.

Would a new receiver help? I searched and found the following:

https://www.amazon.com/Realtek-300Mbps-802-11n-Wireless-Network/dp/B00AVSRLTO#HLCXComparisonWidget_feature_div

Is this a reasonable item?

Wireless.
If wireless, connect directly by cable & test.

If separate modem & router, bypass router & connect directly to modem & test.

I have spent literally hours on tech support with Comcast and Arris, and it was determined by Arris that the power level is way off. The power level should be in negative values as opposed to the levels shown in the chart.

Oh, this is me EXACTLY one week ago! Got new Arris SBG 6900 Ac and replaced their modem/router. Speed had been up too 100 KBPS/15 and went to 38/10. My xfinity wireless phone went from 119/20 every day to 30/10!!!! Was on with comcast and arris for days. Arris tested and said all power levels way off, etc. Comcast of course saif Arris is wrong, etc . And On it went. I finally made Comcast come out. At first they said their tests were all correct and Arris was clueless. I believe Arris above Comcrap I assure you! I made him go outside in the rain. Oh gee, poor guy. He found a bad wire, replaced at and all is much better. Still not up to what it was but very close. I too would like to know why when buying a better and faster modem/ router,,, things slow down.

I just spent about 20 minutes with a comcast agent who went through a procedure of resetting my modem/router. He said that it would take about an hour for it to fully take effect, but so far, no joy.

Yup, there is no joy! My speeds are acceptable as I have no choice. Around 45- 50. I pay for up too 100. I will ALWAYS keep looking for better but i can run all of my pc's , phones, Tablets fine, so I will continue on, unless things get worse. They stink.

My latest: Xfinity tech support home visit was not impressed with the revelation from Arris stating that the power level indicated in the post #11 of 51dBmV wasn't important. He advised that my 1 year old Arris didn't have the broad wifi capability of newer models. He was able to increase my speed by piggy backing my older router with my current equipment and was able to increase my internet speed, but not the speed I expected. Direct connection to the modem/router gave incredible speeds of around 650, but couldn't come close with wifi. I'm getting better speeds now, but not what I expected. I hope to upgrade my modem/router in the near future, hoping to get the the wifi speed I expect.

The tech suggested that I could get plug in router extenders, 3 for about $100.

I don't have anything to add here, just commenting. DSL and cable aren't available in my area. The village has 5 meg DSL for $85 (including mandatory landline), I'm 8 miles from that (it works 7 miles from town, I'm 15). I have a regional cell carrier. I have a $400 cell signal booster with roof antenna to get a signal. I pay $50 per month for up to 4 meg service, grandfathered on an old plan with a 200GB cap (reasonable, new plans are 50GB at that price but include a free zone after midnight). I'm only about 6 miles from the tower, about 1/4 mile of trees on my property right by the house plus more groves farther out, plus the poorly penetrating signal they use cause a fairly poor signal here. It doesn't multitask well, but web browsing, typical pages load almost instantly most of the time. Here's a typical result.

:::.. Internet Speed Test Result Details ..:::
Download Connection Speed:: 1847 kbps or 1.8 Mbps
Download Speed Test Size:: 5 MB or 5120 kB or 5242880 bytes
Download Binary File Transfer Speed:: 231 kB/s
Upload Connection Speed:: 221 kbps or 0.2 Mbps
Upload Speed Test Size:: 256 kB or 262144 bytes
Upload Binary File Transfer Speed:: 28 kB/s
Timed:: Download: 22.712 seconds | Upload: 9.504 seconds

The current "better" of the two satellite services has been full and closed most of the time since '12. Hughesnet keeps stuffing in customers. Speed is often less than 1 meg in the evenings with the current service, new will likely be better for a while. But they have an issue with the new satellite. Here's the latest and greatest satellite plans available in my area. $10 lease fee on top of this. Patiently waiting on LEO satellites, or for Verizon to offer a better home option (I can barely get their signal, but it works).

Hi Kitten, my response in post#23 may have been wishful thinking.
I pulled the extender and my speeds went up. LOL I installed the extender using Netgear's install instructions. The alternate directions are to connect with WPS, Which I will try next and see what happens.

The WPS connection is mildly better, achieved by moving the extender from one plug in to another until I got the best result. Best result isn't much better.

I've almost totally eliminated boot up time - without installing an SSD, or using other tweaks or tricks.

How?

I almost never boot up because I almost never shut it down and only reboot when an MS, or other, program mandates it.

I put the computer to "SLEEP" instead, which keeps in memory whatever programs are already open at the time making them almost instantly available when I wake it up.

AND,

I used to be stuck on dial up at home - I was often jealous of the speeds forum members posted - but a few years back cable came to the neighborhood. Now my speed looks like this:

And now I'm no longer jealous.

Jim.

I don't get jealous of speeds. What I have works 99% of the time, pages load within a couple seconds, etc. I would like to multitask sometimes, like browse the internet while something is downloading/uploading (yes I could set it for prioritizing a little better, but most of the reason it doesn't work is because of poor signal). Multiple people would cause an issue, but then a person would just have to get another account with what I have.

Dialup was always less than 28.8 and disconnected all the time (static on the copper lines). It was also limited to 30 hours per month, which was enough. All the major providers like AOL were long distance calls. I switched to 0.5 meg satellite in '06, 7.5GB download cap, 2.3GB upload during 30 rolling days. I used Linux, so I would still order cds so I didn't have to download them. Still know several people that have dialup, but the phone company won't let new people on that.

All internet here is advertised as "up to". Satellite carriers say "up to" 5 meg with the last service. Most evenings, due to congestion, you would be lucky for .5. The last upgraded satellite didn't cover about half the country, so things got very congested. DSL is "up to", at the end of the line, you might pay for 5 meg, but you might get .25 at best. That's just how it works, no guarantees, if you don't like it, tough.
