"Unable To Hide Desktop Icons"

I have searched google for fixes but no luck.I have Win 10 X64 Home. I did the right click on the desktop and select view and check and uncheck the show desktop icons and it doesn't work. I don't have gpedit.msc either, must be Pro only, Any ideas why this doesn't work or how to fix?

In the window that opens when you right click the desktop, click on "Manage desktop Icons" and select "Hide Icons Always" then checkmark "Hide Icons Always".

Next, go to View in the same window and select uncheck the icons displaying, which you've probably already done.

Some combination of the two settings should effectively hide the icons.

Jim.

Must be the difference between Home and Pro.

It's the next to the last item on mine. Expanded, it has these settings:

Jim.

EDIT: Or maybe not. I just noticed the last item pertaining to Iconoid. It's an old program I use to return icons to their assigned locations after changing screen resolution, among other things. It has an option to hide desktop icons - so it may be the source of the screenshot I posted.

Anyway, Iconoid is free (donation ware) at Sillysot.com

You have something going on there that I don't have. I have Pro and do not have those options either.

It should work by clicking view and checking or unchecking desktop icons. I would check permissions (click on your name, highlight desktop and click on properties above. Everything except special properties should be checked) to make sure a virus hasn't changed permissions. If that is ok I would run a system file check. If there are file integrity violations an upgrade from the latest version of Windows 10 should fix that. If you go to Personalize, themes, desktop Icon settings you can check or uncheck allow themes to change icons but I don't know if there is anything else you could change in there that would help. There seems to be little on the subject that I could find.

I just installed Win 1803 a few weeks ago when it came out.,it's the latest,so that should have fixed anything that was wrong.I don't know what you mean to check permission by clicking my name?? What name? Where is this at? SFC didn't work and never has in 20 years I been doing this stuff.

Sorry, I keep forgetting that I use a start menu app. You might have to find the desktop folder through the Users menu on your hard drive. Once you do it will have a bar over the top of the folder where you can check security properties. I have run SFC on many Win10 computers and repaired integrity violations with upgrades. I could never do it in Win 7.

Google gpedit Windows 10 Home to find 32- and 64-bit versions to download, and install in Windows Home computers using the directions included on many sites.

I haven't done this personally but there are so many "Thanks" comments/reviews that it must work. From what I read, 64-bit installation has slightly more steps.

I just installed the 64bit beta (which isn't actually a beta) of Iconoid (Thanks for the reminder Jim). Seems to work fine, despite being 8 years old.

Proviso: Dual monitor system. Icons set to hide as needed, ie when mouse has been stationary for 10 seconds. At that point the icons and the taskbar on my primary screen disappear, but the taskbar on my second screen doesn't. No big deal. Everything returns when the mouse is moved.
If the icons are set to hide always they do just that, but the taskbar behaves as for hide as needed. The Taskbar hide can be adjusted seperately.
Also note that Iconoid is a true old-fashioned TSR and must remain running in background.
