"Networking & Sharing - how to do it?"
Tue Dec-04-18 05:16 PM by therube

Networking & Sharing.
Windows Networking & Sharing.
(I've always hated, never understood, Windows networking, but I've always worked my way through it. Till now...)

A "simple" small network (LAN).
A mix of computers, desktop & laptop, a mix of OS, XP, 7, 10.
A mix of OS versions, "home", "pro".
Two networked printers & a networked NAS.

All I want to do is to have all the computers be able to see one another & be able to move files back & forth between them.

I don't care if a login is needed or not.
I don't care if I have to set up multiple accounts on each machine so that I can get in from another machine.
I really don't care if they are "wide open", i.e. where "everything" is accessible to other machines on the network.
(I'd think it better that "everything" is not accessible to the Internet .)

I don't like or use "MS" concepts, like, oh, what is it, "home groups" or something like that.

Never understood the "categories" of file sharing; Private, Guest or Public, All.

Similarly I've never known which I should be using or the settings to set in there?

Before (before some new box purchases), before, before with a mix of XP & Win8->Win10, everything worked, "enough". All machines see all the other machines. Some machines may be "totally" open, others maybe only particular directories accessible. Login may or may not be required. In any case all worked.

XP can connect to 10-1, & see & access EVERYTHING.
(Not sure how I accomplished that?)
XP can connect to 10-2, & see some.
(Not sure how I accomplished that?)
All machines can connect to XP, & see & access all.

Now this new (HP) desktop box, Win10 Home. I have been "setting" this up, exploring it...
(I hate it, 10.)

XP, I see the "computer", but I cannot browse it?

Quote:

\\HP is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this resource. Contact the administrator to find out if you have access permissions.

The specified network name is no longer available.

(Not sure what that last line means?)

XP, I can see 10-1 & 10-2 & do all that I need.
(They are 10 Pro, if that matters.)

10-1, 10-2, can see HP, can browse its directories, but cannot copy file to it or create new directories? A login may or may not be requested.

Oh, Win10 & its dropping of network protocols (or some such)? (Master browsers & what not.)

Got me on that.

HP is at 1803, currently. Other 10's may be at different version levels (& that too is a total bunch of crap, but that is an entirely different story, though possibly part of the problem as every Win10 version has its own set of "features" *bugs*).

On HP, I have shared "C:" & also C:\TMP.
(I now C that C only had Read permission & that might explain the other 10's being able to browse but not write. But that also does not explain why XP cannot even see HP yet it does see the other 10's).

What am I missing? (Why does this need to be so difficult?)

From XP, I can \\Howard, & see that machine.
From XP, \\Neil, the HP machine, says, "(64) The specified network name is no longer available."

Ideas?

Looks like I've got that part worked out - from the other Win10 machines.
Changed the permissions, adding Full & Write.

Now, I need to get XP to see HP?

I'll note that along the line, I lost the (LAN) network totally.
No clue how that happened, it did have to do with HP, but all machines stopped seeing anything (except for the Internet).
Shutdown ALL devices. All printers, disconnected the NAS. Shutdown the switch, unplugged all from the router...

Then started 1 computer, XP, plugged in the network cable, plugged that into the router. Plugged in another, made sure the one was talking to the other. Plugged in another, made sure all were talking to one another...

Steve,
Make sure that XP and HP are set for the same workgroup name and then report back.

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

Yes they are.

(Previously, prior to HP, that machine, a WinXP, did have a different "Workgroup" name - different from all the other machines, which were all the same. Nonetheless, except for having to "browse" for it separately, there were never any issues.)

Quote:

That related to, https://forum.altap.cz/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=37393

Screenshot in that link too.
At the time, NEIL, what is now HP, what was then an XP machine, was shown as 'Master Browser'.

Currently, NetBScanner does not show any 'Master Browser'.

Though everything works, at this point, with all machines connecting being able to access one another - except for my XP machine connecting to (it can see it, & only to) HP (which is Win10 Home 1803, currently).

When that happened, as I was starting machines back up, I (WinXP) was initially 'Master Browser'. But once all the machines were up, that designation no longer showed.

Changing:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters

MaintainServerList, from Auto to Yes, made no difference.
(IsDomainMaster was already there & set to YES.)

Maybe it is not: Networking or Sharing, but rather Security?

I'll note that HP, 1803, still has "HomeGroup" - whatever that is, that has since been removed from later versions of Win10.

All the Win10 machines have IPv4/IPv6 IP's.
XP machine only has IPv4.

How, 10, is using Private sharing profile.
She, 10, is using Guest sharing Profile
HP, 10, is using Private.

Network Discover is ON in all cases.
File & Print sharing may be ON or OFF.
Public Sharing may be ON or OFF.

Added EVERYONE with (at least) read-write permissions to C: (& below /it did say that would be dangerous/) but that did not help with XP connecting to HP!

Something about "Credentials". Said to Remove them or some such.
No idea what Credentials are, what they mean or how or why they got there.
Some meaningless to me entry was there, & I simply removed it.

No difference.

(HP) BIOS update seems to have fixed an issue with the screen coming up 2" to the right (after sleep or restart) & ghosting when connected to VGA.

(A DVI cable, in the short time that I had that cable connected, did not have that issue.
Video driver update, also done, had no affect on that.

Neither the video driver or BIOS updates has had any affect on the networking issue :frown:.)

HP:
HP Pavilion 590-p0076 Desktop PC
AMD Ryzen 5 (2400G, so with built-in graphics)
8GB Memory

Tried a different XP computer, same deal.
It can connect to everything - except for HP.

---

Reinstalled Windows (10, 1803, 17134.407) for the umpteenth time!
Early on prompt (during the initial setup) asked me about sharing, I said yes.
After that, did nothing more but change the Computer Name & Workgroup (to the same Workgroup as all the rest of the computers).

Created a directory, C:\TMP.
Right-click, Share with (or some such), Everyone & set Full access.

\\localhost shows that it is shared.

Once again, XP can see HP, but when I try to actually access it, "\\HP is not accessible...".

A different Win10 was also able to see HP, but too was unable to actually access the share until I added a Password to my HP User Account. That done, I copied a file from different Win10 to HP.

But XP to HP is still FAIL.

---

Install Windows (10, 1809, 17763.168).

No change.

(Win10 takes forever to install. Win7, I can install in a flash. 10 took hours.)

Just some stuff to look through in the morn...

No matter what, I cannot get (multiple) XP to connect to HP.
XP sees HP, but cannot actually connect to it.
XP can see & can connect to all other machines; XP, Win7 Ult, (other) Win10 (Pro's as the case is).
HP can see & connect to all other machines including XP.
It is only HP, Win10 Home, where XP cannot connect to.

???????

\\HP\TMP, fail

NetBIOS over TCP/IP, enabled
Computer Browser service, running
File and Print Sharing, installed

So the whole deal seems to have been the SMB1 protocol (& the Server portion of that, in Win10, disabled by default <even if rightly so>, & required for XP to talk to 10]).

Wow, you have described every reason in the world to get rid of XP or start manually transferring files for security reasons if you have important programs you have to keep. If it's just to keep the machine Lubuntu would run better on it and has a similar Windows type menu and certainly easier to network if you keep a Fat32 partition for file transfer to avoid permissions.

I'd rather think it to be another reason to avoid Win10 - at all costs .

Well if they had come out with 10 in the win 98 days it would probably be cooking breakfast and cleaning the house. I ignore the apps. It's one heck of a stable OS that takes everything I can throw at it. 32GB of ram doesn't hurt either. I never want to look back, It's what Windows should have been in the beginning IMHO.
