"HP Stream Password"

Hello and Happy New Year,

It's been a while since I posted a question so here goes.

This is an HP Stream tablet. So unlike HP it has no part number or model designation other than Stream.
when you turn it ON there is a request for an Administrator or Power ON password. After three attempts an error code is displayed. On this tablet it is:
63467458

I went onto the HP Forum site and this is a known error condition but the link to the solution and the poster of the solution has been closed.

I have tried various F keys on Boot with no solution. One suggestion on the HP forum was to remove the CMOS battery. Well this has only one battery and it is the main. Also there are no screws on the bottom so I can not figure out how to separate the keyboard from the case. I got it partially unclamped but it appears something else is holding it together.

Any help would be great. I don't see the owner paying $99 for a year of help when this tablet probably only cost $200.

Regards,
wings515

Dan K

The link opens to a blank page for me in IE11, but opens to a sign in page using both Firefox and Chrome variant (Cent) browsers.

Maybe try this if possible.

I did see instructions on Google on how to get into your device by resetting everything at bootup.

https://www.google.com/search?as_q=reset+hp+stream+device&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&as_sitesearch=&as_occt=any&safe=images&as_filetype=&as_rights=

Sorry, that did not work, it still went into the password request on Blue Screen.
The HP Forum probably need a login to be able to see the post related to the answer to the original post.

I think I'll continue to try to get to post my request.

Watch the second half of this video. It describes a reset of the tablet without passwords. This is a Win 8 model but it should apply to all models if you don't mind starting over. This was the middle video. https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&source=hp&ei=1opnXPnJLonL_Qak6LbgBg&q=hp+stream+factory+reset+without+password&oq=hp+stream+tablet+reset&gs_l=psy-ab.1.5.0i22i30l10.2004.32561..48957...8.0..0.108.1963.28j1......0....1..gws-wiz.....0..35i39j0i67j0j0i131j0i131i67.Wup1BLwgGDY

I have just started messing with tablets. They are usually tabbed together. If you want to open them start at a slot in the case where you can work a credit card or something similar between the plastic halves and start running it along the edge until the tabs start separating and popping apart. all the buttons should be micro switches but watch things like micro SD cards that are easily broken. Please don't ask me how I know. They do make a tool for this but I haven't gotten one yet.

Thanks for the reply. This also did not work. I even tried the Volume Down button and Power ON with no success.

It seems there is a known way to calculate the passcode value based on the number displayed after three attempts.

I have yet to find someone that knows how to determine this number.

Dan K

Keep trying, the first tablet I tried to restore gave me fits trying to get into the restore menu. It finally worked and I couldn't tell you which combination of volume up down or both I used but one finally got me to a black screen where you can use volume up/down to highlight the action you want and on /off to implement it.

Thanks for the link but the tablet is at the Blue Screen state. When you mention the Volume Down button on this tablet the Volume Down is F7. Do you mean the Scroll Down button?

I was actually describing the only control buttons on a standard tablet. The second tablet I recovered was an Asus transformer with a detachable screen. The screen portion only has volume and power buttons. The touch screen had stopped working until I removed the screen cables and discharged them. Unfortunately it has happened repeatedly but it always works, so I have removed the cover repeatedly. It might help to know the specific model and OS you have. I have never seen a HP Stream. Are there different size screens?

Might be time to open things up and see if there might be something that will give you a clue as to what is going on. Change the CMOS battery, re-seat cables etc. perhaps re-seat heat sinks and replace thermal pads with thermal compound. There is a point where you do what you have to do to determine if the project is worth continuing.

From what I have seen of the tablet opened on YouTube, there is no CMOS battery. It is all powered from the main battery.

I also worked on an RCA tablet and it had the same configuration, no CMOS only main battery. Really cheap!!

I tried to split the case but something in the middle kept the process from completing. Had a good hold on the keyboard. No screws on the back.

At some point it may not be cost effective to continue on this path.

look for a removable trim on the keyboard or push clips that will pop it out so you can get to the few internal screws. A tutorial on replacing the keyboard might help.

I would rather find the way to contact posters on the HP Forum site to get the unlock code. For some reason it seems like it is User Hostile to either post a question or send a message to a previous poster. I must be doing something wrong.

I am going to try it again.

The owner has a second Stream he gave me with a broken screen. It does log ON so it might be easier to change screens than fight with the unlock code.

Dan K

I can't really follow this thread, but I went to your link, and the solution was 35185808 if that means anything to you.

Another suggestion was 31750104.

Well finally found someone on the HP Forum that could decode the log in number. I turned out there was a small "i" preceding the number. I got the code and entered it. The tablet unlocked but gave an error message no boot device found. It seem the SDD had been totally erased and formatted.

I have a USB iso of Win 10 and did the install. since it is an earlier version I spent a lot of time doing updates but it is now at a stable state.

Thanks to all for the replies and suggestions. The HP forum site is helpful but somewhat user hostile. Just MHO.
