"Strange downloads of jpgs from Reddit using Firefox"

Website: https://www.reddit.com/r/VintageRacing/comments/9vouo2/drifting_round_the_corner/
I download this picture from Reddit and it has .jpg extension. Will not open in Win10 Photo app or in ACDSee 20? If I change extension to .png I get same result. If I change extension to .webp it works??? Same behaviour exists on all my desktops and laptops. But not every picture?? Some other websites too, Chive, for instance.
Is this coming from the websites? Changes to Reddit? Updates to Win10?
Updates to Firefox? Virus? Running latest Norton, keep Win10 updated etc.
This behaviour is recent, maybe 1-3 months.
If I use Edge download is fine. Microsoft sabotage?
Attached picture is my download that doesn't open. Does it in yours??

Attachment #1, (jpg file)

webp is a (relatively) new image format.

More modern browsers, including current Firefox, support webp images.

Very possible a website will display based upon what your browser supports.

In this case, I (on XP, on an "older" browser - one that does not support webp) am served an (actual) .jpg.

The .jpg is 1800 KB
The .webp is 80 KB

Quite a bit of difference in file size (to both download & to be serving).

(To my eyes, the .jpg is of better quality then the .webp, but close enough & given the file size differences...)

Strange. I just downloaded the same file in Win7 using Chrome. The file came in as a .jpg with a file size of 186 KB. The size variance is weird. Viewed OK using anything I tried.

180 & 180 & 1800.

Seems it all depends on "what" you download.

Hmmm...

And I guess I can't really say just what "all" might
be at this point.

This "full size" jpg, 1800 KB is this:

https://i.redd.it/4xiqain8qdx11.jpg

The "cut down" size, 180 KB, is something like:

https://preview.redd.it/4xiqain8qdx11.jpg?width=960&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=31eea0c4f05b3e2a2bab8608889a190fed433036

(That has a "session" part, so might not be valid to
others?
Note the "crop" parameter.
Note also ".jpg" and "&auto=webp")

So...

It looks like OS also plays into the picture.
With a quick look, Win10 got webp, Win7, for whatever reason
got jpg.

I'm thinking that the original source file is only jpg, &
that is 1800 KB.

What is served, displayed on the web page depends on
browser/OS.
And that is a cropped, lessor quality, then the original
source file, & will be in either jpg or webp formats.

The webp that (OP) attached here is 80 KB.
The webp that I just downloaded is 200 KB.

200 KB webp is fairly easily > 80 KB webp.
1800 KB jpg is still > 200 KB webp.
