"Macrium Suddenly Stopped Working Correctly"

The following is pretty complicated, but I’m hoping that somebody here will have a solution; otherwise, I will have to look for another backup solution. What other backup programs would you recommend?

The same day that Macrium downloaded and installed an update, was the same day that my backup stopped working. Coincidence?

For several years, I’ve been using Macrium Reflect free home edition to do automatic daily backups of my C: drive to an external USB drive.

I noticed that yesterday’s nightly backup did not complete successfully, and according to the log, after running for 13 minutes, Macrium aborted with the following error message:
Initializing
Write Method: Using File System Cache
Validating location: E:\Macrium Daily Backups\ - Invalid (not writable)
________________________________________
Backup aborted! - None of the specified backup locations could be written to

I unplugged the external drive, plugged it back in, and then reran the backup program, getting the following error message:
Backup aborted! - Write operation failed - Access is denied.

However, an image file was created, but with a suffix of ‘.tmp’; note that the size of the image file was about the size of the previous day’s image file.
Note also that Macrium also created a file entitled backup.running in the backup folder, and the existence of that file prevented me from running Macrium again, not until I deleted the backup.running file.

The Macrium website was of no help, and I didn’t find any solutions via Google. You guys are my last hope.

Thanks, Richard.

Was the update to version 7.2.4156?
Mine was updated to that version on Wednesday but I haven't done a backup yet since I do them on Sunday.
I'll do one now and see what happens. I haven't had any problems before after an update so we'll see.
I'll report back.

I did my usual full backup (to an external USB disc) using 7.2.4156 with no problems and could open and read the backup using the Windows Explorer option.
I suppose the obvious problem may be a faulty sector on the USB disc giving a write error although I would have thought Macrium would have detected this and given an error message to that effect.
I would do a test on the USB disc to see if it finds any bad sectors.

I haven't done one since Sunday, so I can't comment.I do one every week to a USB,external..., but I also do another, on Sundays, which I like better, because it is more straightforward, and also free. It's Aomei Backupper. Give it a shot. Paid version also available, and can back up to different hardware.

In what way is it more straightforward? Just curious.

I ran tests on my external drive, and no errors were detected.

My Macrium was updated to v7.2.4156 (UEFI), 64-bit. In the deep, dark corners of my mind, I seem to recall having had a problem with the 64-bit version of an earlier version of Macrium, so I'm going to uninstall Macrium and then install the 32-bit version. Wish me luck.

Any opinions about EaseUS Todo Backup Free, AOMEI Backupper, and Paragon backup software?

As usual, thank you very much, Pcqandaman and lenjack.

I am also using the same 64-bit version as you are.
The only other backup I've used was Acronis TrueImage but that's many years ago.
I'm very happy with Macrium.
I've no experience with EaseUS Todo Backup Free, AOMEI Backupper nor Paragon.

If the 32-bit version works then I reckon it could be that the USB drive had a transient error and has recovered or there is a bug in the 64-bit version which I really do doubt.
Before you reran the 64-bit version did you delete the files that the failing backup had created so that it was clean for the rerun?

Paragon is rock solid. I don't know if they offer a free version, I have just used it with the Paragon Hard Disk Manager software.

I want to thank everyone who contributed to helping me solve my Macrium problem.

Everything is working now, and I don’t know exactly what fixed the problem.

Perhaps the following long description of what I did will help someone else.

Yesterday afternoon I discovered that I could not create a restore point due to a VSS problem, and throughout the day while trying to solve my Macrium problem, I had continually run into hints that VSS was the problem with Macrium. I had run Macrium’s ‘Fix VSS Problems’ tool several times, but that didn’t fix the problem.

I shutdown and restarted the computer several times, hoping that the computer might fix itself.

I downloaded and installed an older version of Macrium Reflect, version 6, but the problem persisted.

Throughout the day I ran DISM, SFC, and CHKDSK several times against both the internal and external drives, but the Macrium problem persisted. I formatted the external drive, but the problem persisted. I noticed that 2 of the VSS writers had a ‘Failed’ notice, but I didn’t know how to fix that problem.

Early in the evening, after restarting the computer for the umpteenth time, I was able to create a restore point; so I ran Macrium for the umpteenth time … and it worked‼ I have no idea what fixed the problem, but I keep looking back at the fact that the Macrium problem began the same day that Macrium downloaded an update.

I’m still running version 6 of Macrium Reflect even though the current version 7 might now work, but version 6 works, it does what I want it to do, and I’m not going to mess with it.

Richard

If you are staying with version 6 I would create new recovery discs since the ones for version 7 may not work (assuming you’ve made some!) with a version 6 backup.

Pcqandaman, thanks for the suggestion. I didn't even think about possible compatibility issues. I just now finished burning Rescue Media, so I should be all set.

Thanks.
