"How much anti-spyware do I really need?"
Sun May-26-19 09:14 PM by bobbo

My paranoia runneth over. I am currently running Ccleaner, Malwarebytes, Spyware Blaster, and SuperAntiSpyware in addition to Microsoft's Windows Security. I'm finding that I'm having to re-check in to most apps, including PCQandA each time I access the app even when I click on "save". I used to be able to save the check ins and directly start the app. Is the Windows Security app enough? SuperAntiSpyware is a paid edition. What edits can I make to keep the check ins?
Which apps should I keep?
Are there edits I can make to keep my long ins?

I use all of those but they never find anything more than a tracking cookie once in awhile. If I were to eliminate any of them it would be Malwarebytes and Spyware Blaster. I'd keep SuperAntiSpyware as it's paid for with lifetime updates. Personally, I'm happy with Windows Defender - others probably have a different opinion .

But, beyond that, I don't understand your question . I never have to "check in" once logged in to the Forum or elsewhere.

I just saw your edit - I suspect that any login issue is not caused by any of your "anti" programs but by CCleaner. For logins, make sure your browser is set to accept cookies, and not empty them when you close your browser, and then check CCleaner to make sure that you allow specific cookies to be saved when you run CCleaner. Or, just allow cookies without cleaning them - any tracking cookies that get in will be caught when you run Malwarebytes.

Jim.

Thanks, Jim. I had forgotten how CCleaner deletes cookies, and I used the option to not clean selected cookies. I'll check Firefox for cookies retention.

Edit: So far, so good. My log in for PCQandA is saved.

Edit: My sign ins all seem to be working after some adjustments in Ccleaner and FireFox permissions.

I use only Malwarebytes, one time paid lifetime, and Avast Antivirus free. Occasionally, I'll run adwcleaner, which is a free offshoot of Malwarebytes. Doing this for many years and don't need anything else, if I use common sense.

I regard SpywareBlaster as an absolute must and I thank you for reminding me it's far too long since I updated it. I remain convinced it's the main reason MalwareBytes doesn't find much.
I was fortunate enough to get the paid version of MalwareBytes just before they switched from lifetime to annual subscription. IMHO it is now the best security program going around, but at the current annual price I wouldn't be using it. Free MalwareBytes, not so much.
I also have the paid version of SAS, but don't run it in background. I find it very useful for tracking cookies, but not much else. I run a scheduled scan every night and that wipes out any tracking cookies that have snuck through the previous day.
I don't regard CCleaner as a security tool, but nevertheless it is a useful tool if used with some care. Over-enthusiastic use of CCleaner could be where you're losing your login cookies.
In general I set up my browsers (I only have six if you count IE) to accept first-party cookies and reject third party ones, and don't allow CCleaner to touch cookies at all. Avoid the Easy Clean option recently added to CCleaner.
My default browser is Opera, and I use Avast Secure Browser for financial stuff (banking, PayPal etc). The others are just there.
No real opinion on Windows Security. I think in my case paid MB beats it to find nasties.
IMHO, nowadays Windows Firewall is perfectly adequate.
