"vpn over attbi cable modem"

has anybody here successfully made a vpn connection over the new at&t broadband cable modem network?

i have a sonicwall tele firewall/router/gateway at home, which has a secure vpn tunnel to our firewall at work, which allows me to work from home occasionally.

however, after the switch to attbi the vpn connection does not work anymore. i tried recreating it numerous times, no success. an employee here who uses a laptop with a vpn client over cable modem has similar problems.

i actually got to chat with attbi support, but they were extremely helpless. when i inquired about whether they allow ipsec protocol #50 and have upd port 500 open for ike, i got the following response:

Using a VPN is not discouraged and is not a violation of the Acceptable Use Policy (unless the customer is hosting a VPN server); however, AT&T does not provide technical support for a VPN beyond confirming that TCP port 1723 is not blocked.

so, does anybody else have any info or success / failure stories?

Poor Alex's post looks so lonely here.   Sorry, I have no experience with VPN over AT&T's network, but like you, I have used it successfully with the @home service in the distant past.

i did eventually get it to work today, here's how: i once again removed the vpn config on both ends, restarted the firewall to clean the slate. then i recreated a new vpn config on both ends, but this time i used manual key instead of ike. guess what? it worked immediately.

i have another employee up north who we simply updated the ip addresses and it worked fine with ike. but not for me. the only guess i have left at this point is that they are blocking port 500 to disallow ike on my particular node of the network.

either way, i'm happy i got it work again and i wanted to make sure i share the solution with you, in case anybody else runs into this situation in my area.

Happy computing!
