i'm running around 53c /127f with my other fan the very loud vantec fan it's usually around 114. but it's so loud that it drives me nutz. so now i have a fan that comes with a amd xp 1600+ on my 1ghz....i'm sure it's fine. but is that a decent temp......i heard they get up to like 160 before they blow up. but what is a normal temp.

A lot will depend on the ambient temperature in the your room which you did not mention.
However, I run 39/40C in MB Monitor with a XP1600 using a TT Volcano 6Cu CPU Cooler, one exaust fan and a Enermax 2 fan 365W power supply in a 18" tower case. Room Temp is no more than 69F.
I would class the Volcano as reasonably quiet.
I get feedback from others that their temps rise into the 50C area in the summer where the PC is located on a second floor and no air conditioning.

I agree, it sounds a bit high for an XP. I have the 1800XP with a Thermalright SK-6 and a 60mm fan, and two 80mm case fans, and my temps run around 38 degrees with ambient air temps around 70. With my old T-Bird 1gig they used to run consistently above 42 degrees, but even in the summer with no ac they never hit 50. One thing, are these temps after a hot and heavy gaming session or just normal run temps? If they are just normal running temps, you might want to look into a better heatsink/fan combo. I've heard that using thermal paste instead of a pad will help too.
