"open program with"

When I download a progam, I am now getting a window that pops up and it will ask me. What program do want to open this with. When I pick the program notepad, wordpad or anything else nothing happens and I'm stuck with nothing. What is causing this to happen? I can't finish opening the program that I have downloaded.

MS instructs to "run this program from its current location" if you hover cursor over the download now button http://messenger.microsoft.com/download/download.asp?client=1

did you gain any new icons on your desktop or entries in your start/programs or in the system tray? If it was saved on your computer the downloaded file is named 'mmssetup.exe'

Messenger 4.5 has a reputation for causing problems.

My system developed a shutdown problem and I uninstalled 4.5 and haven't put any Messenger back on.

Here's a thread with a link to download Messenger 3.6 which ran good for me.

Programs or applications are a type of file that generally end in .exe and will run by themselves. The 'open with...' is for file association. Open Windows Explorer; choose View, Folder Options, View tab; disable the Hide File Extensions For Known File Types checkbox; and click OK. Choose View, Details to see full details for your files, including the type of each file. In most cases, the file type will include reference to the program that is currently set to open files of that type.

Whatever you are trying to open, what is the exact name of the file or program, including the file extension? (for example: winword.exe) What version of Windows are you using?

Here is a little info on file association (open with)
http://kg7ka.tripod.com/fileextensions.htm

So i have something out of wack when it comes to opening the file that i downloaded from the internet? The file i was trying to open was a msn messenger and a file patch on ie 6.0
So the next time the open with pops up i should go to that file and see what program it needs to use to complete the installation. So what do I need to do to correct this file extension error or what ever it is called? I am using 98w and thanks for finally getting me on the right track of things.

I think I ve got this almost figured out now. I been their and looked at those files and folders that are used to automatically open a program when downloading a file. most files are exe. type right. so don't i look for the one that is used to open that type file? So what file is used to open them with. Then i can check to see if that is the right one and go back and install again and see if it works the right way.

You don't need anything to run an .exe file, just double click on it. That's why it's got an exe extension it stands for executable.

coexpress:

Forget about file associations or extensions for a moment.

Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders and type "mmssetup.exe" without the " marks into the Named: slot you see in the Find:All Files screen that appears.

In the lower slot labeled Look in:, make sure your C:\ drive is listed there.

Click the Find Now button and see if mmssetup.exe is found.

Post back after you do this and tell us if the file was found.

Ok, the download and installation didn't work for some reason.

Here's what Microsoft says to do if that happens.
--------------
Try saving the software to your hard disk:

1.Create a folder on your hard drive where you want to save the software.
2.Make a note of the folder's name so you can find the software after it has been downloaded.
3.Go to the Web site and download the installation file to your download folder.

Here's the link to the download page...

http://messenger.microsoft.com/download/download.asp?client=1 .

When you get there, click on the Download button, don't select "Run this program from it's current location".
Direct the download to the folder you just made on your hard drive
Close your browser (go offline).
Close all windows programs except Explorer and Systray, especially any anti-virus program.
Double-click on the mmssetup.exe file from your download folder to install the software.
When the installation is completed, restart your computer and see if Messenger is installed.

Exactly when did the Open With option appear?

Do you now have the mmssetup.exe file and had you just tried to open it?

Try this to see if you can open other .exe files.

Do the file search like you did in post 20 above but enter "notepad.exe" without the " marks instead of mmssetup.exe.

If notepad.exe appears in the file found window, double click on it and Notepad should open.

That file is part of Internet Explorer.

Look at this support info...
The file is listed in Contents of Dcom95.exe towards the end of the page.

Since you have recently changed versions of IE a couple of times, the IE installation is probably damaged.

I would try installing the IE 5.5 Service Pack 1 over the IE 5.5 you have now if you can get the download.

What about running the IE repair tool to see if it'll fix your present installation of IE 5.5?

1. right-click the icon on your desktop that you have been trying to open. Choose properties. What is the full name of it? (something.something) If it's a shortcut, what all does it say in the target line?

2. click start, settings, control panel, then double-click add-remove programs. You're just going to look in there. Does it say MSN Messenger in the list that comes up? How about which version of IE is listed there? Press cancel to get out without changing anything.

3. are you posting on this forum from the same computer or on a different one?

You are getting sleepy, very sleepy...

When you do a Properties check like Telo requested, do you have a Mssetup Properties window open that has three lines showing Target information?
If so, what exactly is listed for the following...

Target Type:

Target Location:

Target:

Need to see the exact entry for Target: above.

we're not getting anywhere trying to install the download. Go back into add/remove programs and remove the Messenger 4.5 entry. Select it then click remove, even though it says that it is not installed. Click OK and then it's probably a good idea to reboot before you go on.

In internet explorer, click tools, internet options, then delete files under the temporary internet files section on the first page. OK,OK.
Go to the link in post 7, but this time run it from their location as MS recommends when you position your mouse over it. Write down any error messages if it does not install. Cross your fingers.

You are getting sleepy, very sleepy...

If it is MMSSETUP.EXE it doesn't get 'edited' or 'opened with' anything, any and all .EXE files run essentially all by themselves. Something is not right. Sorry Mike, I cannot help further as I don't know what else to suggest, except maybe to start a new thread titled "Can't install Messenger" and hopefully it will attract more members with ideas to respond.

You are getting sleepy, very sleepy...
