"low on virtual memory"
Wed Apr-24-02 10:33 AM

recently after leaving my laptop on for a while i get this message:
"Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied. For more informaion, see Help." eventhough sometimes i'm not even running any applications.
i have win2000 os, and 191Meg RAM. this should be enough memory right? how can i correct this problem?
thanks.

Go into System Properties in Control Panel. Go to the Advanced tab.Virtual memory> click on the change button. What does it say? Just the numbers.

first of it says:
"total paging file size for all drives: 276MB"
it gave me two options. "applications" and "background services.
Here is what is in application options:

"
Paging file size for selected drive
Drive C:
Space available: 409MB
Initial size(MB): 276
Maximum size(MB): 552

Total paging file size for all drives
Minimum allowed: 2MB
Recommended: 280MB
Currently allocated: 276MB

Registry size
Current registry size: 18MB
Maximm registry size(MB): 51

in the "background service" options, it basically says the same thing.
o, i want it to do a print screen and past the picture here, but i don't know how to paste the picture in the message. sorry.
thanks

Wow you don't have much room left on drive C.
Yes most people have applications checked. The minimum and maximum aren't far off from Microsoft's specs. Usually the minimum is 1.5 times your ram(288) and the maximum is twice the ram(384) Do you use a bunch of graphics or memory hogging applications?
I thought maybe you might have added some ram and not adjusted the page file. Bump up your low number and see how that goes. Windows 2000 and XP use memory and the page file a bunch.
You are running out of room on that C drive. That is most likely where that warning is coming from.
Try cleaning out you temp files and maybe uninstalling programs you don't need or get it on a bigger partition. If you have Hibernation enabled and don't use it that will give you back 192MB. Lower that upper number to 384 that will buy you some more space. Good luck!!!

Sorry I didn't answer faster headed to work right after I asked the question.

the reason why it is so low on space is because i just stored a movie in my harddrive. before i stored the movie, i had almost 1 gig of free space, and still it had that error. before, this laptop only had 64mb ram, i then added 128mb ram to it increasing it to 192mb ram. like you said, maybe i didn't update my page file. so how do i update it? you said to bump up my low number. would that be bumping up my initial size? like to 300?
i was thinking that maybe i have junk programs running in the backgrounds when i install stuff that maybe use up my memory, but i wasn't sure how to fix that.
hey again thanks alot.
by the way, i don't really care when you reply. i'm just glad that my questions are answer. thnks

Go back to Device Manager> Advanced
Change the initial size to 288
Maximum size to 384 OK out of there. You might have to reboot. I can't remember. It will tell you.
How big is your HD? When it gets on or below 10% free space you will get that warning. That is why I suggested uninstalling etc...

i partition my harddrive into 2 partitions, C and D. C has 5gig and D has 4gig.
i just reset my initial size and maximum size. yes, it did tell me to reboot, which i did. also i deleted some file to free up some space. now my C drive has 794megs, and D with 217megs. hopefully i won't get the message again...hehe. would it help any if i free up space in D drive also?

Well at least you are over 10% free space. You should be fine. They are making huge HDD for laptops now. Maybe you could look into that. It would be a shame to be so constricted in the future. My son only has a 6 gig HD on his Dell and he looked into getting a larger HD, not sure if he did. The prices weren't that bad.

You need to clean up and/or remove programs and files that you do not use or need. The next best thing to do is get another or larger hard drive. You need more space.
