"Should I upgrade my video ram?"

I was thinking of buying my dad a new video card for his computer for christmas, but before i go and do that i was wondering first if i could get some advice on whether or not it will even be worth it.

here are his current specs

400mhz pentium with 320 mb ram
8mb onboard video ram

He mostly plays solitaire, but occasionly he'll play The Sims, or Nascar, something along those lines.

If I bought him say the Asus Pro Pure v7100 (NVidia GeForce2 MX-400 chip, 32MB of SDRAM) or something in that price range, would the upgrade be significant? or will the rest of the system hold back the video improvments?

thanks a lot!

Rick

Yes it will be significant, there is a big difference in 3D performance between a regular 8 Mb video card and a 32 Mb Geforce 400

Thanks for the reply Roni, I appreciate it. i was a little worried that the rest of the machine was going to keep him from being able to feel the effects, but I'll go ahead and make the purchase now. Thanks agian!

He won't be able to see the full advantage of the GeForce, but yeah, the video card *definitely* needs to be upgraded if he's still running an 8MB onboard card. I have a Geforce 2 GTS/32MB and when I upgraded from a PIII 600 to my Athlon XP 1600, *Everything* was faster, including games.

What Roni said and maybe you could give him a game like EXILE and load it in for him and you will see the difference. I'm using Geforce 3 with 64mbs and I swear you can actually see the depth in a scene.

Like many of us over thirty. the high speed shoot'em ups hold little interest but good graphics in an adventure can be very attractive

Thank you for the tip Old Dude. I will definitely check out Exile for him. I know he likes games, but he is certainly not interested in the games I like. (Red Alert 2, Max Payne) By the way, does anyone know of a good game store on the internet that has very good prices most of the time?

Thanks again
