"Very slow P.O.S.T."

My friend has a Dell PC with a Pentium 3 700 CPU, running Win98 SE. Originally, the memory was 128 MB and recently I added a 256 MB Crucial stick (384 total). No other modification has been made. Lately, he reported extremely slow POSTs and I witnessed it yesterday. The process can take more than 5 minutes. During one of these periods, I hit the DELETE key and it eventually went into setup. The DELL logo screen went away and I could see the memory being counted at a rate of about one MB per second, or slower. After counting the RAM, it went through the other checks at a normal rate and then entered setup. While there, it took several seconds to move from one item to another. Would appreciate any advice as to how I can help him to overcome this problem.

Try it with the 256-meg stick in the first slot, and the other slot(s) empty.

If it's still slow, that RAM stick's density may be incompatible with the specs for the mobo.

If it works OK, then put the 128-meg stick in the next slot and test with both.

Just for your info, I also have a PIII 750, had 2 stks of 64 in the 1/2 slot, got a stk of 256 (384 total), moved the 256 to slot 1 and the 2 64's to the 2/3 slot. Never hiccup'd and its a flyin!

Go into the BIOS and reset the nvram, save the change, and it will exit back to the POST part.

I talked my friend thru the memory switch, by telephone, and the problem remains the same. He lives 30 miles away and is afraid to go into setup. I will have to go there next week and try Bob's suggestion. Thanks.
