"Win XP and disappearing "my computer" Help"
Fri Dec-14-01 11:02 PM

When I first boot to XP and try and go to my computer the window loads and then a file with flashlight starts searching for my computer. This goes on until it finds it (doesn't always) or I cancel. After exiting 3-4 times it will open. Any idea's on what's going on? This is a clean install of winXP. Also is there a way to clear the my recent documents folder?

Are you clicking on My Computer from the start menu or the desktop?

the reason I ask is that if you dragged my computer off the start menu (which creates a shortcut to the link in the start menu ) and then deleted the link in the start menu, then XP will searh for it every time cause there is not a shortcut in the start menu (which the shortcut on the desktop refers too)

To fix this delete the icon that is on your desktop.

Then Right click on your desktop and select…

Properties
Desktop Tab
Customize Desktop Button
Put a checkmark in the box by My Computer at the top.

Then click Ok-Apply.

This creates an "Actual" and not a Short-cut of a Shortcut.

No I don't have any desktop icons. It's one feature of XP that I really like ( the no clutter look ).
