Marti,
I downloaded the patch to a download file, then when I open it I get a prompt window that says "This update requires Internet Explorer 6.0 to be installed" (which it is), but then when I click "OK", the window closes but nothing else seems to happen, i.e. I don't get the sense that the patch is actually installed.

Is there a way to check to see if it has actually been installed?

#12. "RE: IE5.5/IE6 Security Patch - *GENDER ALERT*"
In response to dbahn (Reply # 11)

By the way, here's some of the text in the FAQ section of the bulletin. Do you notice that the attacker is "her" and the victim is "him". Does Microsoft have a gender issue?

"What’s the scope of the first vulnerability?

This vulnerability could enable an attacker to potentially run a program of her choice on the machine of another user. Such a program would be capable of taking any action that the user himself could take on his machine, including adding, changing or deleting data, communicating with web sites, or reformatting the hard drive.

In order for the attacker to successfully attack the user via this vulnerability, she would need to craft a specially formed web page and host the malicious executable on a site that is accessible to the victim, either on the Internet or on their local network. She would then have to force the user to view the web page. She could do this either by enticing the user to go to her site, or by sending the web page as an HTML email. When the web page on the site finished loading, the file could execuate automatically. In the case of an HTML email, when the user opened the mail or viewed it in a preview pane, the file could execute automatically. "

The installation instructions say you have to reboot in order for the patch to take effect. Generally, MS updates will tell you "This update is already installed" if you double-click on it to install it again. Reboot and then try that.

I just installed it in my system, and it even gave a confirmation dialog that it had been installed and asked if I wanted to reboot. So I suspect yours didn't get installed correctly. You may need to try again.

PS: Welcome back, Marti! We sure missed our 'quilter.

It still won't install. I tried deleting the file from my download folder and downloading it again from the Microsoft site. If I try to open it directly from the site I get the same prompt about needed IE 6 to be installed, and if I try to save it to my download folder, it completes the download immediately (instead of the 10 minutes it took to download originally). What's happening? I really do have IE6 installed (I checked again to be sure), but it doesn't believe me.

Dave,

IE does that sometimes. }> I can't seem to put my hands on an answer right now. I looked through Sandi's site, but the answer didn't jump out at me, maybe you can find one (if it's in there): http://members.iinet.net.au/~sandi/MVP/

You could try running the IE repair tool, just to make sure there is nothing wrong with that. Also it says to run from current location, and after rebooting check under Help/About IE and it should show Q313675 as being installed.I would try the repair first, then d/l again.Hope it works for you,Tuff

Dave,

The error message that you got is part of the problem. Go look at Sandi's site, I think there is mention of the "can't repair problem."

Marti,
Couldn't find anything specific on Sandi's site. I got a script error message trying to reinstall IE6.
Line: 312
Char: 3
Error: Syntax error
Code: 0
I'll try again. I forgot to disable Norton for the download, so that might be part of that problem.

If Norton turns out not to be the problem (and I'd be surprised if it was), try running SFC as well.   Remember to have your WinXP CD ROM at hand and allow plenty of time.

Good.   Then SFC is even easier to use.   Just click Start/Run and type SFC and press Enter.

Did I miss something, you still didn't get the IE repair tool to run did you?If not that is the problem. If you have to you can just reinstall IE6 over itself, and it will just overwrite the files. Then the IE repair tool should run,and the patch should install.Tuff

If your not using IE6 the others are the same way .Just saw your post lol,we must have been posting at the same time.Glad your up and running
