"Output from screen to a standard TV"

:+ Hi people, first time poster here.
Im looking for assistance on what is possibly a really easy question that maybe a 5year old would know, but, can i watch my computer screen on a normal TV.
The reason i ask is that i have a laptop and many video files of uni lectures and conferences that are in .avi format that i want to watch. it does however become a bit hard on the eyes to watch my small blurry laptop screen for hours at a time. Can i connect my laptop to my TV?
My laptop is a Toshiba running XP Pro, it has a video out on the back (yellow plug)! My TV is your standard TV with Scart In and also Video/Audio in (yellow/white plugs)!
If i can connect them what do i need and how do i do it. Thanks a lot for any assistance!

You can pick up a video cable at Radio Shack with an RCA plug on each end. Connect the yellow jack on the computer to the yellow jacj on the TV and set the tv for Line program input.

Thanks people for your help. Got the output to my TV very easily but the problem now is that the output is in B+W!. My laptop screen still shows colour but my TV in black and white.
Any ideas anyone.

PS-i checked my desktop-properties-settings-advanced
but dont have a displays-TV option as suggested.

Thanks again.

How long is the cable you purchased, and is it a 75 Ohm video cable, not a cheap audio cable?

its about 1.5m long at its one that came with my DVD player. 3 core with red, yellow and white plugs! Picture displays fine but no colour at all, just plain black and white.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Are their any other settings i can change? Ive tried changing/configuring the monitor output e.t.c but to no avail?

The pictures good, just no colour!!!

Sounds like your just about there. Get yourself an RCA cable to test out the video. Plug one end into the laptop's video out and one into the TV's yellow video plug. On the TV, chances are you will have to switch the input, sometimes with an actual switch for input or sometimes a button on the remote (signal input, AV1, AV2, etc). You may need to look at the adapter settings in Windows to see if it needs have the TV signal turned on.

Not knowing your setup intimately, this is how I do mine:

Right click the desktop -> Properties -> Settings ->Advanced

At this point, depending on your video card, there may be a tab called 'displays' Activated the TV and voila.

Also, if you have a headphone jack, you can plug another RCA cable (with 1/8 headphone adapter on it) into the jack and the other to the red plug on the TV to get sound. Stereo sound just needs RED/WHITE plugs on the TV and the applicable cable.
