"the little things"
Tue Oct-08-02 01:12 PM

Things you probably didnt know about me.

1.)Dreadful fear of heights
2.)Even though I canoe I have a fear of the ocean.
3.)I have a fear of barfing(I cry and everything) heh heh...
4.)I stay up at night as late as possible to avoid panic attacks.
5.)I have a fear of bridges.
6.)I hate making left turns when driving. I have to make right turns where ever I go. LOL
7.)My bathroom has to be meticulously clean. Even if I have to clean it myself.
8.) I sleep with a teddy bear that Ive had since I was 8
9.)My fave time of year is Christmas
10) I have an obsession with Nazi's and serial killers I like to research them to try and figure out what goes through there head. Id like to know what makes them so F***** up.
11)I have a fear of diseases. For example I wont go to Britain because of the mad cow disease over there. I wont travel just so I wont have to take the malaria shot in fear of going crazy
12.) My fave movie is Nightmare before Christmas.
More might be added.

Anyone else care to share?

Hello Denise, don't really have much to share except I'm also afraid of heights - well, not so much of the heights themselves but the thought of falling from them. I'm fine inside tall buildings but I get a bit spooked if I stand on the edge of a cliff for example.

I'm not worried about diseases themselves but I hate having needles! For this reason I'm also terrified of dentists. (who isn't?)

I can't read anything whilst riding in a car, bus, etc. - after a few minutes I get sick - could best be described as motion sickness - this happens to quite a few people I believe.

I also can't stand spiders and cockroaches - and we get lots of those here in Australia in summer.

That's about all I can think of for the moment, by the way - I think your website's great - the pages are a little slow loading on dialup but definitely worth the wait.

Carl

I was bitten by a shark when I was ten, and used to have a ridiculous fear of water (pools, ocean, bathtubs). My drill instructor in the Marine Corps helped me get over it. Can't think of anything else thats really "wacky" about me.

Can't stand confining places. I just become more and more nervous and agitated. The longer I’m feeling that way the worse it gets. Claustrophobia I guess. Funny, it didn’t appear until I was in my 40s.

I have a horrible fear of bees and wasps, yet I've never been stung. I also have a germ phobia and am constantly washing my hands yet I'm a registered nurse exposing myself to other peoples germs all the time.

Two of the things I really dislike doing are:

1) Making lists.

2) Telling people about myself.

Sorry, Denise, I couldn't resist it.

In fact I 've never been the same since I contracted Mad Cow Disease!!

PS. Not too keen on Sharks or Australian Spiders - especially Funnel Webs!

Don't know about sharks , but I love spiders . Killing a spider is not allowed in our house . My husband will call me , if he finds one (and BC is heaven for spiders ) and I will catch him and take him out . Have a big huge African spider (framed unfortunately }> ) in my bedroom . And hope to get a nice Mexican tarantula , someday
I'm not too crazy about hights and flying , but most of all I dislike cruelty in people .

"If you want to live and thrive, let a spider run alive..."

My parents wouldnt allow a spider to be killed in our house. I have carried on the family tradition, all spiders treated carefully here.

Forgot - Until recently my brother kept a Red Kneed Tarantula as a pet. (Hope the name is spelt correctly)

Hi Jane

>"but I love spiders . Killing a spider is not allowed in our house"<

It would be if you lived in Australia. Trust me!

We don't kill spiders in our home here in England, but when I spent 4 months in OZ, I learned to be very wary of spiders, especially the man-eating ones they have in the Outback!

Nah, the spiders here in Oz aren't that bad. Not where I hail from anyway. Now we do have some large scorpions in the bush near here. Not very partial to those suckers.

I used to have a fairly strong phobia of being in buildings with high ceilings (eg movie theaters, auditoriums, concert halls etc) when I was younger, but that's subsided. I've looked, but I can't seem to find a name for it anywhere. I wonder what I should call it.....

Sounds like a form of agoraphobia, possibly with a hint of acrophobia (fear of heights) sprinkled on for good measure. Agoraphobia is non-specific, and the word itself was choses because it can be interpreted broadly. So a fear of very long hallways, for example, is just another form of agoraphobia... or it means you have watched "The Shining" one too many times

Denise, you are not the most paranoid! That would be me.
1) won't fly. haven't sinse 1986! feel that if I take a fear of flying course and DO fly, my new confidence will be rewarded w/a crash.
2) love people and new places. this makes the flying thing a real bummer.
3) have anxiety attacks and depression problems. have taken (on and off) Prozac and Xanax for years. the Proxac has been a life saver and I rarely need the Xanax if I take the Prozac. anxiety manifests mainly in cars. feel a sort of vertigo or loss of balance when driving a long distance, though in the city it never happens.
4) scared of heights. worst story: I'm on a date in L.A., the guy takes me to a tall bldg, downtown and wants to go to the revolving restaurant on the 30th floor! I tell myself I can do it. we get on the elevator and after about two or three floors we are suddenly in a glass elevator travelling up the OUTSIDE of the bldg!!! I nearly croaked.
5) love animals very much. feel that all life is sacred. have done a lot of animal rescue. have been a vegetarian for about 28 years. don't kill bugs, except for fleas and mosquitos - hey, nobody's perfect!
6) hate the cold but love the Great Lakes so much that I'll always have to be near them, at least in the summer.
7) had a very close encounter w/a UFO, in the mid seventies. no I was not stoned! it was huge and triangular w/flashing lights around the perimeter. it hovered w/o a sound and was close enough that I, and the people w/me, could see windows on it.
8) scared of big cats - the wild variety, like lions and tigers, etc. have dreams where I'm outside, everything is ordinary until a big cat comes walking along, like a dog. glad I don't live in California anymore, for that reason.
9) secret thing I've always wanted to do but don't know anyone that I'm mad at (which I would have to be do do this): so you know a real jerk and would like to cause them some grief: Put an ad in the paper for a couple of days for a REALLY fantastic estate sale. list all the stuff that gets the hard-core collectors out. a good, long attention getting ad. state "Doors open promptly 7 A.M. - hehehe! can't you just see it?! your victim opens the door to get the morning paper or go to work and finds a line of 200 people, WITH COFFEE, waiting to enter their house! I laugh every time I think about it.
Well, as they say, enough about me.

P.S. Sophie - that dream thing is BIZZARE! worthy of an email to Art Bell, at the very least!

Wow! I never realized how luckey I am.I don't fear anything but like Shelly I have an aversion to elephants.I allow them to come into my living room and even let them surf the net on my machine.I try to get them to like me because I never want to have to do the job illustrated below to earn a living. As you can see,Denise things could be worse......

One thing I really cant stand is RATS. When I lived in Boston I would see them all the time and some of them get BIG and they are very bold, not afraid of people etc. You could look down an alley way in broad daylight and see a whole bunch of em climbing around the trash and dumpsters and it would just send a chill up my spine. The worst thing is that some of these alley ways are the backside of restaraunts and other food places and it just makes you wonder about the whole sanitation of places in the inner city. They can run fast too, you would see them dart across a street or running around a parking garage and I was amazed how fast they can move. I also found out that Rats have a very small skeleton compared to there overall body size which allows them to be able to squeeze through holes and cracks that are half the size of there body. They are so nasty looking and carry diseases and are also infested with nasty things like lice, fleas and so on. They are horibble. I used to have nightmares about them. They are very good survivors and can even become imune to some of the poisons and so on that people try to elliminate them with. They are nasty, and they can jump high and they can bite and gnaw there way through a whole mess of things. They are pretty crafty at climbing and so on. I saw some climbing up a rope that was used to tie up a ship to a dock....so they can make there way on and off ships and just about anywhere they want to go. The only good rat is a dead rat in my opinion.

Rats can carry a number of diseases however the pigeons you see in cities can carry far more. Something like, 12 or 13 for rats and 32 or 33 for pigeons.(I cant remember the exact numbers).

I am no fan of rats though . Also stopped feeding the pigeons.

Yes pigeons are pretty nasty too but at least they dont gnaw their way into the walls of buildings and apartment complexes and so on. Rats can attack too and they will if you corner one and they have very stromg teeth. I read that rats and most rodents have teeth that continue to grow biger all the time so they need to gnaw at things inorder to file them down. Not good. Ive seen good size holes in walls that were made from rats. Another thing rats do that is aweful is urinate everywhere. A friend of mine started to notce little puddles around his home on his counters and so on and found out that it was from rats coming out at night and urinating everywhere. I also heard that they have very bad eyesight so sometimes you can be right next to one and it wont see you so people sometimes step on one and so on. Pideons are a big city problem and they are hard to get rid of....they can nest just about anywhere and have young ones. Those are 2 city pests that just are so difficult to deal with, dont even get me started on roaches.

A rat story that will freak you out . Happened to me and my brother in an elevator (in Europe ) . We went to look at some furniture. And the store was on the first floor . So we get in an elevator and we are talking away , while the door closed and it started up .I felt something darting over my feet . Look down and there was a rat . The elevator was small , just for 3 people . So we were so freaked we didn't make a sound, just started to dance around to avoid the rat . But the bugger did something I would have never believed , it jumped up , almost to my face level 5'2" . It did that over and over , till my brother stepped on it .That ride took ages , I don't have to tell you . After we got out , so did the rat. but it was hurt and I felt rather bad. Security from the store killed it . From then on I will not get in an elevator in Europe , if I don't have to and if I do , I check first . If it would have bit me I would have spent 6 weeks in the hospital, getting those painful rabies shots . Ouch I would have not believed it could jump so high.

What surprised me was that I didn't make any sound. No screaming or anything I just tried to see what the rat was doing so it wouldn't get me in my face . I guess the poor thing was as scared as I was . that's why I felt so bad to see it dead . There was nothing else to be done though

That is my nightmare right there! Rats and mice. I would have totally freaked out, I can't believe you survived it. I saw Fear Factor once where the challenge was to stay in a crate filled with rats for 3 minutes. No way! I don't even think I could do it if they guaranteed me a million dollars.

Yeah you are right about rats gnawing into buildings. I worked in a restaurant a few years ago, where they had to put broken glass and chicken wire in the basement walls to stop the rats coming through from the sewers.

All rodents have that endearing habit of urinating everywhere. Some hawks have eyesight sensitive to UV light to enable them to spot the trails of rodent urine from the air.

Edit - spelling!

That is awful! I think the worst an animal has done to me is bird plopped on my mose lol. Oh and dogs bit me but over time I got over my fear. One of my goals is to get over my fer of the ocean too. It helps that I race canoes. I like to try and face my fears and get over them because life is too short and I have things to do!! lol. Im glad people have shared in this thread.

I actually have a fear of the ocean to some degree. Ive been out on all kinds of boats, snorking and so on. But here in Florida there is a lot of things in the water that can mess you up like sharks and even jelly fish can stick onto you and some of them are poisonous. I don't mind being out at sea a little but I'm not crazy about being way out there tens of miles from shore, you just never know. I'm not the best swimmer. I like the bigger boats...ones that have additional life boats if needed and I also prefer boats that have a lounge and serve beer. Even swimming in the ocean can be scary, I got caught in a fast moving current when I was a kid and I almost drowned. The sea is powerful and when a storm hits it gets crazy. Dry flat land is where I like to be. FLying is something I try to avoid also. I have done it a dozen times or so but not crazy about it.

Here in Vancouver Harbour where I train in my canoe there is a current that goes right through the middle of the Harbour and goes out past Stanley Park. I would say the roughest part is right under Lions Gate Bridge. Anyways... one day in 60 km/h winds me my husband and a few of his guys from his mens crew decided to use the outrigger and go out around the barges as we always do during practice we just dont usually do this in 60km/h winds. The current that goes through the Harbour was moving fast as the tide was rising rapidly not to mention the speed of the wind it was ROUGH out there.I thought at first I thought "yes Im going to be brave Im going to work at this I know Ill do it." At first it was calm by the shore but as we moved out into the harbour I could see how the ocean changes colour in rough water and calm water. Wen its rough its an ICY GREEN and white. We were being bombarded with waves. I was sitting on bow so guess who got the most wet?? Yup I did because I was breaking the wave for everyone else. At this point I was thinking it would be a REALLY good idea to get back to shore. My strokes were not in time at all which is dangerous because in order to keep balance on a canoe or an outrigger you have to be pulling at the same time. We moved past the first few barges alright as we were surfing the waves. The last barge was a tough one because the current was pulling us towards it and we need to get AROUND it we almost hit the barge It took 3 of us to pull on one side to steer tha outrigger away from it. The skipper was yelling" GET US OUT OF HERE!!!!". So we did we got out of there and were heading back to the canoe shed. It was such a rush!!! I knew there were dangers though too. For example IF we had hit the barge our ama would have popped up and over we would go and the lighter ones like me even would have headed right UNDERneath the barge. Even the stronger ones like my husband have had close enocounters with being sucked under the barge when the current is strong. It could take a 2 foot wave to pop you out of your canoe and under the barge you go. In our case that day we were in an outrigger. No one dared take a single out and head out in the waters that day. We were not the only crazy ones out there that day. The False Creek r=Racing Canoe CLub had decided to take there outrigger 6 out as well. They flipped over. Some flipped over in there Outriggers got back in and flipped over yet again. The Coast Guard had to save alot of them that day. The thing was some were not to far from shore but they still couldnt even make it back to shore. I am thanking God to this day that we did not tip over. I think about it now and Im crazy out there!!! Ahh well.... Im still here alive and well. }>

I just want to weigh in as someone who happens to like rats and think they have a bad rap. I had two big, grey rats, both girls named Heather and Feather. They are affectionate and smart. Rats, like anything else, are just trying to survive. They are not mean or vicious. Many things in cities carry disease, including street people! I used to live in Long Beach, Ca., where we had a lot of rats. I had a neighbor who caught one in the alley and made him a pet. He was a really nice rat and he hated cats! This guy would walk around the hood w/the rat sitting on his shoulder (the rat was huge) and people would get completely freaked out. I was always perplexed at how such a little rodent got people so bent out of shape. I also had two field mice rescued from a factory. Their names were Nippy and Shakey. They were incredibly smart and meticulously clean. They travelled the United States with me and they thought I was God.

Let's see. I have a fear of falling... That's falling, not heights. I'm fine on the 90th floor of a building looking out of a window, but put me on a 2nd story ledge with a chest-high concrete wall keeping you from going over the side and I'll still back away.

I also used to have this thing about swallowing pills. I'd freak out anytime I tried to swallow a pill. This lasted until a couple of months before my wedding. Beth had said that my swallowing pills was a precondition before we got married. Finally the pressure she put on me got to be more than the internal fears I felt about swallowing pills. My parents were so impressed (with Beth more than me I think ).
