"How depressing is this?"
Tue Aug-08-06 03:20 AM by _Chewy_

Occasionally I'll glace through the headlines on Firefox and today's headlines were just awful! The more I read, the more I became depressing. I couldn't help but feel the world is just falling apart.

I also read on BBC's website that 3 American soldiers were on trial for killing an Iraqi family and raping their 14 yo daughter. A 4th solider was implicated by helping to cover up the crime afterwards. I'm completely dismayed by what's going on in the world around us.

It's no wonder I don't like to read the newspaper! Anyone else feel the same way? Who reads the newspapers anymore with crap like this?

Nice post Chewy. I have a brother who never reads the paper. Hasn’t for years. And he is blissfully happy going about his life. I wish I could do the same. But watching the news is like watching a train wreck. You just can’t avert your eyes, even though you know something terrible is happening. Our own troops allegedly acting like animals. The Middle East exploding, possibly into WWIII. I can’t remember the news being much worse than it is now. And I listen to all the arm-chair quarterbacks who haven’t a clue tell us how this all can be solved. I hate being negative and being one who whines without offering a solution, but it is hard to see a way out right now. We all need to cross our fingers or knock on wood. Or become more like my brother.

I hear ya Terry. With all the crap going on in the world around us and getting more & more cynical about politicians these days, it's HARD not to adopt a pessimistic outlook. It's hard to find that balance of ignoring the media because if you totally ignore it, then you risk being clueless to the world events. I honestly try to track a few issues that interest me and ignore the "train wrecks". Otherwise it just becomes unbearable.

And Shelly shame on you - I thought for a moment you were going to say papyrus scrolls.

Yep, ignorance is bliss ... I don't have TV, I don't have a radio, I haven't bought a paper in 20years ... the BBC's website crashes Firefox/IE under Linux & Windows.

The world could disappear tomorrow and I'll be the only one left, 'cos I didn't know it was happening.

I only read OT here just to keep my end of the contract as a Mod

So, who's killing who today then ... oh, hang on, don't bother I really don't care.

I have read newspapers every day since I was about eight. I admit the early ones were on parchment scrolls.

It surely is ! I cannot add anything to Terrys well written reply. I have also been reading newspapers longer than i can remember, wouldn't be without my daily paper,i have a brother in law that i would venture to say " has never read a paper, and he is fat dmb and happy.IMO ,the news media seem to dwell on the bad,and fail to show the good, and there are some good things happening.

Nope, I dont read the papers, not only for all the bad news, also,
the "lies" papers give out,
and the waste of paper, that is, trees.

Think about how many trees are cut down to give readers a few minutes reading.

Then, where does the oxygen you breate in come from.
Trees and the oceans. The oceans are being pulluted, all I can say is, god help - how many future generations away - the people because they'll be in big trouble, you can also add to that the global warming.

don't forget, your grandchildren's children (or whatever generation) will be amongst those suffering.

Thank You.

Each to his own. I guess ignorance is bliss, but, once upon a time, I had a friend who ignored his cancer.

It no longer disturbs him.
