"Do you like the three separate forums?"
Sat Oct-12-02 09:37 PM

Back at the PC911 Forum I was firmly convinced that the one combined forum for computer stuff and O/Ts was the best way to run it. Now I'm sure I was wrong and that having separate forums is really the better way. What do you think?

I wish I could figure out a way to blank out or not show the forums that I'm not interested in when I pull the new post.

Try this:

The Computer Forum

From the Forum page, save the URL to your desktop via 'File/Send/Shortcut to Desktop' and it takes you straight to The Computer Forum.

Guys,

Coming in via the main link (also known as the lobby) is my preferred method. Then I can utilize the "read new" feature. That way, you can easily see what threads are new or have been updated.

Also, coming in via the lobby shows you any new PM's (if you forgot to enable email notification). On PC911, I had one guy respond to a PM 6 months after it was sent!

When you click on "read new," just select the forum that you are interested in from the drop down menu on the left. We just tried it and it worked.

I tried what you suggested and it does work but it would be nice if we could scribe to the forums we want to see so we would not have to do this. It is not a big deal compared to many of the other forums that have so many different forums.

In this case, I concur. But I don't necessarily think you or anyone else was "wrong". Alex had valid reasons for keeping it under one roof. Personally, I think that's one factor that gave the forum its unique character and helped it grow.

At this stage, having the forum layout as it is now is just right. I expect it to grow greatly again and already see many newbies and new members dropping in for advice. I still prefer having the Computer Forum like it is and not split into hardware, software, etc. Perhaps later, demand will require it and may require additional moderating staff also. For now, I like it.

Defintely YES!!

I like it this way. I too thought that I would not like to see the OT split off, but I found out I was wrong. I would resist seeing further splits of the computer into Hdwe, software etc. We had that over at Bitbender for the while some of us were in transition.

Nuff said !!

I don't have time at the moment to mess with computer problems. It's nice to be able to come and keep in touch in an OT forum.

But that means there are questions that I could probably answer going unnoticed by me in the computer forum.

I am wondering how Noreen "blocks" the UD forum, as I also count three forums.

I preferred the mixed forums, but most of our forum goers couldn't handle that. If you think about the forum it was the only one that was not split, thus the strength of the forum spirit.

However, the three forums do work and keeps the crabbing to a minimum, although you can determine a lot about someone if they post long enough.

the 3 forums seem quicker and more precise.

i think i liked the old ones better, tho. when i go to the pc lounge, it's like visiting a foreign country. i still talk in sign (drink, pee-pee), while they're jabbering away!

BTW- i think pee-pee is a pretty universal word. like mama? i meet people from all countries who say variations on that

Splitting the forum was an experiment, and it seems to be working out well so far.

My main concern was that there would be a problem moderating multiple forums, and that has not been the case. I still spend the bulk of my time in the computer forum, where I may, hopefully, be able to do some good, but there have been enough slow periods to be able to bounce around to the other forums.

I wasn't happy with the splits at first, since the setup at PC911 worked so well. But so far it's working here, and I don't really feel like it's a hassle switching forums. It's easy, simply mark the one you are in a "Read" and You're back in the lobby to see where the new messages are.

I have a mixed response. I rather enjoyed the intermix of the tech and casual discussions we had before.

And it seems that having separate forums has kept the abrasive squabbling out of the picture and for that I am happy.

All under the one main PCQandA protective shelter.

There is one thing that I really do like about the splits. In the Computer Forum, it keeps the help requests on Page 1 longer. Much less digging through the pages that way.

Initially I didn't like the split. The computer forum is my first preference - that's why I come here in the first place. The OT is secondary. Most days I don't even have time to look at it. But I'm now getting used to it that way and it's better. If I don't need it why have OT clutter up the page I do need?

I'm up for forums on an as-needed basis, but as things now stand, I see no reason to expand the menu any further, so agree with you Paul.

I think it's wise to recognize that needs change though.   When PC911 was first started, there was no need for a UD forum (no one did it, if it even existed at all then).   In fact, at that time there wasn't even a need for an OT forum (IMHO) because we were still mainly dealing with computer help issues.   Easy by easy, OT posts started to creep in in increasing numbers.   Then the UD 'movement' got going and that became important to many people.

I can't envision a situation where we would need another forum here at PCQ&A, but then I am not gifted with prophetic abilities.   I do know though that everything changes, and it is altogether possible that we could find ourselves in need of a new forum.   Should that ever happen, I hope we are not as resistant to change as we were at PC911.   The results there are a lesson none of us should soon forget.

Thnaks very much,

It bugs me that marking one forum marks them all - this seems counter-intuitive at best. But maybe I'm missing a setting - JP seems to be saying you can mark where you are to get to the lobby, then read new. For me, since it marks them all, there are no new - they've all been marked.

Bob,

Read new calls up the new posts in all forums. If you only want to mark one of the forums as "read," do this:

For example, you want to only mark the items in the OT forum as read. You will see the forum headers for each. Click on the forum header for OT, and you will see all threads displayed. Then click on mark. That will mark only that forum, and you will be back at the lobby. I'm sure others have their own ways of forum navigation.

It looks like what's really happening is the Lounge is getting little enough traffic that I thought it was being marked when I marked the main forum, but it's just that there aren't any new posts there most of the time I check. I never use read new here or anywhere. It's easier for me to look at the icons on the main page, I just used it as an example.

actually, these forums are very easy to navigate. and we haven't had any crabbing (read: flame-wars). i feel like i'm living in a gated community- very safe!

does anyone think that is because of the separation?

Yup. Though I never understsood what all of the animosity was about. Personally, I enjoy the exsposure to various types of people, subjects and opinions but I guess that wasn't the case with everyone.

No I think it has more to do with almost losing the forum and many of the people causing the flame wars have moved on.

There might be something subtly psychological in posting to a dedicated OT forum versus making an OT post in the main forum. Sort of, it's not as much fun to cause trouble in an OT forum. Like kids - raising hell in the house, but send them outside to play and they're bored.

I for one would prefer more specialized sub-forums: hardware, software, networking, (dare I say) case modding, and maybe even sub sub forums: components, builing a PC, notebooks, new computer related items on the market, etc Just mho.

Well I heavily visit this other forum, and there are similair divisions. One thing that has developed is that each one is it's own comunity. Like the General Talk people ONLY stay in the general talk, and don't go anywhere else. Everyone else tends to look down on the general talk people, and so forth.

All in all I can accept it, but I like the old way better.

I doubt that everyone looks down upon the general talk. That perception is in the eye of the user.

I think that you'll find here that most people don't stay with just one forum and they certainly don't "look down" on any of the forums.

Yeah, I do like the three forums, it's like having the 'Three Sopranos' on my PC. Only less noisy.

Something I like about PCQ&A vs. other forums is that the reply posts are easier to follow. In the other forums I have been to, the replies are mixed in a 'straight block' style and hard to follow who is responding to what.

I prefered the one forum. I could see OT's as well as pc related. I could choose to view OT's that interested me. I'm not complaining about how it is now, but it's just what I prefer. Heck, Happy birthday was posted to Tuff and it was three days before I noticed. I spend more time in the computer forum. Still PCQ&A is the best place going cause it's the people that make the place.
