Not quite that simple. You need to differentiate between civil time and GMT (or UT). The UK goes on what they refer to as Summer Time at the same time we go on Daylight Savings Time, therefore it is always a five hour difference between civil time in the UK and eastern time in the US. GMT does not change seasonally so the difference is either four hours or five hours depending on the month we are in.

From my memory and experience UK and USA switch to and from daylight savings time on the same dates, so the time difference between actual time in UK (as distinct from GMT) and in US (EST) should always be 5 hours.

The UK reverts to GMT at 02.00 hours on Sunday 28 October 2002.

We therefore have a fortnight of BST remaining.

Yeah, well, over here, they don't change the clocks. They're always on 'real' time. And get this, China being as big as it is, and btw, it's a wee bit smaller than the U.S., they don't have time zones.
I was working in the western part of the country last year, in the winter, and I thought there was something strange. It didn't get light out until about 9:A. Then, got back over the eastern part and it was back to normal. And, whenever they announce the time, they say Bei Jing time is... What a crock!! No need to say that if everybody's on the same time, ya know?
They are *not* with the program over here. At All!!
I was working the 'holiday', (carnival cruises) out of L.A. years ago, we would go as far down as Puerto Vallarta. Anyway, since their time was different, we would have to change the clocks. And working on the ship, every week was good and bad. Nice to gain, but not so nice to lose.

"The UK goes on what they refer to as Summer Time at the same time we go on Daylight Savings Time, therefore it is always a five hour difference between civil time in the UK and eastern time in the US."

Shelly,

There isn't always a five hour difference between Eastern and UK time. At 9pm* EDT on Saturday (10/26), the UK will be setting their time back 1 hour, so until we set our clocks back (Sunday morning) there will be a 4 hour difference between the two. It happens the other way in the spring (where there is a 6 hour difference for that time period), so it's fair to say for 10 hours per year the British time is all screwed up, sort of like the way they drive on the wrong side of the road.

Dave

* (I am assuming that ukmitch is correct in saying that they set their clocks back at 2:00 a.m.)
** There is always a 5 hour difference between the countries using GMT, however.

No matter where I go in the world, I keep my watch set to eastern time in the US. I care not what time the natives think it is. I lived in London for over three years, and found the locals to be completely confused as to what time it was the whole time I was there.

Hey billyboyb.
Entertainer. Magic and cruise staff which ya gotta do on Carnival. Other cruise lines don't have to, but I found that cruise staff duties were actually very fun and got to meet tons and tons of people. (from every walk of life).
The cruise director was Steve Cassle and then Bob Hammel.
How 'bout you?

dbahn, no matter how many hours difference there are between the UK and the US we are always ahead of you (assuming that you are American) so it's fair to say that it's American time that's screwed up then. We decided to drive or ride on the left so that we can draw our swords and defend ourselves with our right hands against approaching attackers, makes sense to me.

This is the reason that has been given but to be honest I wouldn't like to swear that it's true although it sounds reasonable. It's a similar idea to that often used in ancient castles where the circular staircases (where the individual steps go from narrow to wide) have the wide side on the left going down. It gives the defender an advantage.

edit: just found this on www.askjeeves.co.uk...........
The origin of the rule of the road dates back to how people travelled in violent feudal societies. As most people are right handed it made sense to carry any protective weapon in this hand. When passing a stranger on the road, it would be safer to walk on the left, so ensuring that your weapon was between yourself and a possible opponent. Jousting knights would hold their lances in their right hand, therefore passing on each others' left.

Revolutionary France was to overturn this historic practice, as part of its social rethink. Their military general and self proclaimed Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte was left handed, therefore his armies had to march on the right so he could keep his sword arm between him and the advancing enemy. From this time any part of the world that was colonised by the French would travel on the right, the rest would remain travelling on the left.

Although America was originally a British colony, the French colonised the southern states such as Louisiana and the Canadian East coast including Quebec. The Dutch colonised New York (New Amsterdam), the Spanish and Portuguese colonised the Southern Americans and much of the south west parts of North America.

The British were in the minority when it came to shaping the traffic system. The new independent American republic adopted the drive on the right system, being anxious to cast away any remaining links with its British colonial past.
