Thanks for posting this. The world needs to be continually reminded.

http://nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/great-pacific-garbage-patch/

Quote:
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean. Marine debris is litter that ends up in oceans, seas, and other large bodies of water.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the Pacific trash vortex, spans waters from the West Coast of North America to Japan. The patch is actually comprised of the Western Garbage Patch, located near Japan, and the Eastern Garbage Patch, located between the U.S. states of Hawaii and California...

Thanks for that Paul. I've seen some documentaries regarding your article. The sad part of all of this is that people who express their concerns about the environment are labelled as "tree huggers" or "EnviroFascists".

Patience. It appears obvious to me that more and more individuals, especially the younger ones, see the promise of a cleaner and more environmentally conscious world. I admit, I'm not a strong believer in recycling, except on a personal or very localized basis. I see far too much waste and posturing when this is centralized and products are trucked around the country, and the world, under the guise of environmental concern.

I have always practiced conservation of all resources, and feel that is where the push should be. Also, the virtual banning of all unnecessary plastics. Bottling should go back to reusable glass containers, and no plastic bags for shopping purposes should be allowed anywhere. Paper makes more sense, is environmentally sound, and far more efficient. I prefer to leave the supermarket with a couple of well-packed paper bags rather than two arms full of flimsy, useless plastic bags.

What was the scariest (among all the scary things in that article) was the counter. By the time I finished the article, 93,000 kg of plastic had entered the ocean. For comparison, your average 18 wheeler truck has a weight limit of about 36,000 kg. So over 2.5 eighteen wheeler trucks' worth of plastic entered the ocean just in the time it took me to read this article. Likely, another few thousand kg in the time it took me to write this comment.

Clearly, Jason, the solution is simple. We simply need to get you reading and writing much, much faster!

I once took an Evelyn Wood Speed Reading course. Basically, I was taught how to move my lips faster.

I doubt that would help Jason.

Jim.

I actually read pretty fast. Last year, Noah was into the Percy Jackson book series by Rick Riordan and I decided to try it out. After all, I like Greek Mythology and wanted to be able to reference stuff from the series with him. I finished all five books in a couple of weeks. Then, I finished the Heroes of Olympus series (another five books) by the same author. Then, I read Rick Riordan's Kane Chronicles trilogy. Total amount of time to read the 13 books was about three or four weeks (counting time waiting to get the next copy from the library).

When I get into a book, I tear through it. There's nothing better than getting so completely absorbed by a book that I don't even notice how many hours have passed when I finally look up.

Well, I've already started writing my second novel and did 3,000 words in two days. Does that count?
