"Classical music thread"

So, are there any other classical fans in here? Personally, I'm a big fan of Shostakovich and Mahler, with my current favorite works by them being Shostakovich 4th, 7th, 10th, and 13th symphonies, and Mahler's 8th, 6th, and 3rd.

Currently, I'm pretty obssessed with Shostakovich's life. His memoirs are great reading, and really give you the feeling as if you had known Shostakovich personally. The whole Shostakovich debate is very interesting too.

I knew a guy once, maybe in his early 50's that was seriously into it. Since I had a casual interest we used to talk, and I always remember something he said - "Sooner or later, everyone ends up at Mozart." If I was that snobby, I'd say "Sooner of later, everyone ends up at Beethoven's String Quartets."

Right now I'm listening to Mozart . my favorite among many . Was brought up on classical music and very seldom do I listen to anything else . Even though I think country music is also nice (The old dogs Willie Nelson , Chris and others . )

Mozart's my favorite, too. Even though I don't care much for country, I sure do like old Willie Nelson.

Well now, I certainly won't pretend to know much about classical music, but I have enjoyed German and Austrian composers all my life.   My father knew much more than I'll ever know about music; of his vast knowledge, he told me that the only important part was how you listent to music.   He told me to listen to music with all my might, to give it my undivided attention, to immerse myself in it.   Good advice.

Recently, I've been enjoying Hayden.   When I really need to get a buzz on, it's Beethoven.

Back to the Shostakovich debate, are you a Taruskinite or a Volkovist, MrMan?

I guess I'm a Volkovist, but all I've really read is Testimony and a bunch of internet articles on the subject. I'm trying to get a hold of a copy of "Shostakovich Reconsidered", but it ain't easy.

My favorite? Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, but only when performed by Nigel Kennedy, who is IMHO one of the greatest to ever play.

Well, I can say that I like 'all' music. I don't know if this fits into the classical category, but have you listened to the soundtrack from 'Dances With Wolves'?
I'll tell ya, I have put together so many different pieces of music, cut and splice, so-to-speak, so that the timing would be right for my act. Now with the pc scene, it's so easy to do digitally and then just make a copy to a cdrw.

The Gorecki Symphony No. 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) is nice if you like sad symphonic music. I like the Dawn Upshaw/David Zinman version on Nonesuch.

I love classical music. I have been playing the piano for 10 years so its defenitely something I love. My fave composers are Bach Mozart Rachaminoff a little Prokofiev although I find it a little more difficult to play and last but not least Brahms!

My wife and I love all types of music, but as Shelly says the majority of the time now is spent listening to classical. I especialy like Dvorak's Symphony No.9 "From the New World".

August 1999 my wife and I were fortunate to attend 10 Proms at The Royal Albert Hall in London. It was an experience we will never forget.

Did anyone watch or listen to the "revised" version of the Last Night of the Proms from RAH condusted by Leonard Slatkin? I thought it was a disaster and might as well have been conducted by a dead fish. He obviously completely misunderstood what it was supposed to be about.

Depends on my mood,... I enjoy everything from Bach to Beatles to Bluegrass, but mostly Mozart. I use it as background music while I read, as I have a condition called tinitus (continuous ringing in the ears) and the music helps to mask it.

Schubert, some Mozart, Beethoven, if ther's a melody to it I like it.

Offenbachs Barcolle thingy, Griegs morning, Over the Waves waltz, La calinda, La Traviata, things like that, and Classic FM. I am concerned that Classic FM is going the way of Radio 1 in the UK.
cutting tracks short or starting into them late. Simon Bates is into that, so, the solution is easy, I don't listen to him.

2002 New years day concert in vienns was very good, the Dragonfly was excellent, the conductor really enjoyed that one.

Best Regards
Ian

Certainly a credible list. My only complaint with Classic FM, is that they often do not play a piece in its entirety. That is fine as a background for my computing work, but is often like a meal with nothing but desert being served.

Yes they do tend to play the most popular parts which appears to be what most people like. If you want "full length" music try http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/ which is the BBC's music station, mostly classical but includes some jazz and "out of the way" music. For the latter try "Late Junction" Mon to Thurs around 10.15 pm (UK time)lasts until about midnight, it has music from around the world and it's really interesting. I think that you can listen to past programmes online to try it out.

Very nice suggestion Mr.Man.

Does anyone here listen to the works of the most eccentric and interesting Erik Satie?

The Gymnopedies and Gnossienes are pieces of great beauty as are many other of his works.

The end of Amadeus, when he dies, is brought to the cemetery, and buried in poverty, with Requiem as the background music, is one of the most powerful and realistic scenes I've ever seen in cinematography.

#37. "RE: Classical music thread"
In response to paladin1 (Reply # 32)

Paladin, I have a question for you on the "other board". I am also a lover of classical music-listen just about all the time and always when I am on the 'puter. Sony has a website called VIP where you can listen onlune after joining. Right now I am listening to Mahler's 2nd. I do believe Beethoven is the greatest composer ever (what he accomplished when deaf boggles the mind. Mozart is a close 2nd IMHO. I also enjoy Mahler, Rachmaninoff, Prokokiev, Tchaikovsky and Brahms. If anyone enjoys listening on the internet you should try my local FM station. They play full length classical selections almost all day and night. It's www.WCNY.org. Give it a try and let me know what you think. It's available worldwide. Well, I did it! This is my first post here!
