"Respect and Moderation"

Having made my first foray into our new OT Lounge, I was naive enough to select "Saddam wants a Duel" as my first topic for perusal.

Whilst I am well able to understand and even share some current American attitudes toward this "man", I was appalled at the tone and content of some of the postings.

Bearing in mind some of the history as to why we now find ourseves in this superb, new Forum, I find it almost beyond belief that so little respect and even less moderation was shown in the said posts.

Being entitled one's own opinion is just not an excuse for impolite or aggressive attitudes - in the US, or anywhere else.

Surely we can get off to a better start than this!!

ukmitch, I went and read the thread about the Duel with Saddam. All I saw were a couple of guys with a little disagreement. And that wasn't nearly as bad as I have seen.

I didn't think they were that bad. This is what a Forum is for. An exchange of sorts. Whether it be ideas or ideologies, everyone has different opinions.

Don't let it bother you. Join in the discussions. And really, if you thought it was to much, the place to tell them would be on the same thread. Just my take!

Enjoy life, those people were.

One thing I have learned is that "political" threads are best avoided. Some people seem unable to keep a cool head, this was the cause of some of PC911's OT problems.

Mitch, you come across as a ‘nice guy’ and having been here since July and posting over 900 times you should be aware of what goes on. Until this thread I had never looked at the thread you mentioned. Why? Politics, religion, military and guns seem to generate high volume discussions. I have no interest in flaming similar to that in the other post so I simply stay away. Everyone must choose a course.

Watch that thread grow to well over 100 posts, they are crowd drawers.

You may also notice that some – and I repeat – some of the writers only go there to expound a theory, not necessarily to learn from what others may post.

Heh heh, I would invite you over to the very comfortable UD lounge where we have sound proof walls but I see you are crunching elsewhere. Come on over anyway, we would like to see you pop in.

Derek.

Wise words, Derek.

I'm still, however, surprised and saddened by what I saw. shouldn't have read I guess?

Anyway, thanks for your input

On the UD side, I joined the BBF Team by default really, figuring that a UD Team couldn't operate properly without the support of a Forum.

I didn't know then what Shelly and Co had planned!!

I've visited your new home a couple times now, lurked around, carried on crunching, but thought seriously about moving back.

You've helped me make up my mind.

Not sure about points, badges and things, but the UD meter is still running and I'll deal with my transfer later today, as it's late here now.

Heh heh, you amaze me Mitch. You have visited our hideaway a couple of times without giving us the courtesy of a ‘Hello’. Come my friend, you are not one of our more bashful members. Drop in and yell a few words of encouragement. Or promote BBT, which we will ignore entirely.

We are not hard to find as we are the bottom room listed in the lobby.

Derek.

Derek,

Interesting sig. What software did you use to make it? Just curious, I don't need more than my simple sig on this forum.

Hi Marti, I created both layers in Corel PhotoPaint then dropped them in Gif Animator to create the effect.

You've expressed my thoughts and sentiments exactly, and in a concise and well-worded manner, I might add. It looks as if our new set-up here will allow us to crunch on with the benefit of a forum to promote the team, without bothering anybody who doesn't approve, for whatever reason.
BBT has a fine group of members and crunchers, many of them being my closest cyber-pals, but darn it, it's just not home.
Today I will move 2 computers back to PC911's team, and when I get my hard drive next week, I'll bring a third, upgraded cruncher back to the fold.
I think we will see a migration of homesick crunchers to the PC911 team.

I agree with Mitch.

Remember what CGerman posted as one of the reasons why he was pulling 911 off.

There are places and times for doing or saying things, there are places and times for not doing or saying things.

Bad language for example, a time and place for it. I use it, but only at the right time & place, a forum is not it's a family place.

PCQandA has just launched, it hasn't taken long for the arguing and "fighting" to get started.

I ain't good at phrasing so if it's not as good as it could be i'm sorry. No intention to offend.

Best Regards
Ian

i like the idea of discussions.

but that scar isn't healed yet from 911 closing, and this rancor is picking at it again.

are discussions without nastiness possible? seems like a third-grade question. the answer seems obvious.

kudos to the peace makers, here and in that thread, too.

This lounge was created to provide a place for people to discuss controversial subjects without burdening the computer help forum with distractions.

That does not mean that the OT forum will not be moderated with the same standards applied as to all our forums. Controversy does not need to result in personal attacks, that is in fact the resource of a person incapable of presenting a thoughtful statement of their own position on a subject.

After reading this thread I went and read the thread being discussed and did not see any real flames being thrown. Just a few people who took a comment the wrong way and overreacted a bit. If that is as bad as it gets over here, I will be able to sleep nights. Just remember that making personal attacks on someone you disagree with in a discussion only weakens your position in the eyes of everyone else involved.
