"Anyone Investigating Their Family Tree?"

I don't do so much genealogy now but I've got back to the early 1700s in both parent's families. Been very interesting to see what they died of and the age that they went to work (very young). My father's family were from Bradford in the north of England and were in the weaving trade. My mother's family came from Rochester in the south of England and were mostly fishermen. Very poor uneducated people but their descendants have spread all over the world and done pretty well for themselves.

I've also done the mtDNA test by Oxford University. Linked back to a maternal ancestor 20,000 years ago, just wish I could fill in the gap! You can read about these tests here www.oxfordancestors.com

Noreen have you been successful in accessing the 1901 UK census yet? Considering it came out with all kinds of fanfare it has seemed to be a dismal failure in some areas. Particularly for those of us overseas.

Up to this point I have not tried but I suppoe soon I shall have to get in there finding the old rellies.

I have the 1881 for south west England and the 1851 and 1891 for Dorset only if you need a lookup in that neck of the woods. Also have the first edition of the BVRI.

Sometimes I get distracted, recently I have been sorting old photos and trying to discover the who and when on them . We copied them to CDs and included Irfanview for a viewer in caes they had no photo viewing capabilities. I then sent a copy to any rellie we thought might be interested. My hope was that they would be suitably impressed and dig out their biscuit tin for us to have copies scanned off. Dream on, that has not happened except in one instance.

Derek, (Owbist) I am at my daughters at the moment and too lazy to log off her name and onto mine.

Hi Derek, I've not tried the online Census yet, got rather put off. I've got the 1881 UK Census and the 1891 Yorkshire Census on CDs plus various other data CDs.

I've got quite a lot of old family photographs. One of my oldest came from Australia, the people who went to the colonies years ago saved their family pictures. They knew that they would never see those people again whereas we people at home tended to be more careless with them. One thing I do wish was that they wrote the name of the subject on the back of the photograph. My relatives in Australia and I have spent months trying to work out who they are.

It's surprising how disinterested some relatives are!

Just out of curiosity, how did they manage to get a DNA sample from a 20,000 year old ancestor?

Shelly you can read a bit about it here http://www.oxfordancestors.com/daughters.html
It's rather hard to explain. They don't track the mtDNA back to an actual person but to a time. This mtDNA is inherited in the maternal line and changes very very slowly, by tracking the differences between various lines they can tell which lines are related and roughly when they parted company. So they don't know who this maternal ancestor was but they do know that she existed, roughly when and roughly where. If you look at the site mentioned I am descended from Helena (just an identifying name) as are a high percentage of Europeans.

Yep, I've been entering data into the Family Tree Maker software on one of my computers. Fortunatly, a lot of the research work had already been done for me and I have records of both sides of my family going back to Europe. Turns out I have an uncle back there somewhere who was a General for the Union in the Civil War. And, my brother's wife is a decendant of Pocahontas.

I would be very interested in seeing the source citations linking back to Pocahontas. Have you verified the origional sources for the information you received from others? The internet has spawned mass Family Trees that are all sitting there to take, but nothing has any sources. Word of mouth and even family records need to be verified from origional records. I have a master Family Tree, all proven, and many branches being filled in as I am recreating the families. When I have checked the information, then it goes into my Tree.

The internet is good, but can't replace pencil and paper records.

Just curious.

Ed, I just bought version 9 as 3.4 was a bit old and causing problems on Win2K. The store clerk told me it was $74.95 Canadian, went to the checkout and it scanned at $28.95 so I went home well pleased. Especially as I had checked online before venturing forth. The best online was $99.95 Could not locate version 10 locally but 9 will do me proud for a while now. It includes one month at Genealogy.com free so I shall have to spend a lot of time there during that month

Derek.

Derek, You should be perfectly happy with v 9.0. The only real change in v10 is the ability to save your files in .pdf format. I think it should be v9.1, not v10.

I started about 5 years ago and have a database of 11,000 plus people so far. The saying "I used to have a life, then I started doing genealogy", is true! Very addictive.

I researched my mother's ancestors, then, when I entered my husband's ancestors I discovered he and I are 8th cousins! He's a good one, so I'm going to keep him anyway; 44 years this past May.

Those Acadian families of Louisiana intermarried so much I'll probably find out I'm my own grandma!

I've considered researching my family tree further, but when I go so far back, it often turns into speculation, because of the spellings or misspellings of the last name. On my mom's side, it's all pretty easy right up until my great grandfather who came from who came from the Orkney Isles, but beyond him, I don't know. My dad's side is fairly well documented into the 1700's in Ireland but beyond that, it gets really foggy, because of the spelling of the last name. I have a fairly rare last name, and I even found a distant relative still living in the UK, and he's a retired school teacher, in his 80's or 90's now. So many places claim that they will trace your ancestry for a price, but it's hard to be sure that they aren't simply speculating after a bit as well. I would like to get one of those family tree maker progies to mess with. Funny thing with my last name, is if someone has the same last name, chances are very good that we are related some how.

Take care!

I am back to 1179 on my Mackintosh line, still trying to prove one link though. It seems my family changed their name to Provost for some reason, and after searching for 5 years I have found the following............

I wonder whether I may have stumbled on the origin of the name Provost. This is what Charles Fraser Mackintosh wrote in 19th century in Antiquarian Notes (p 114):

‘It may be interesting to the people of Inverness to know that Bailie Mackintosh, who took up the sword for the Stuarts, and had the honour of having his name included in the list of attainted persons, survived the rising, but was so keenly looked after by the Government that he was obliged to change his name, and, under a name more plebeian than that of his father, interpreting it by its significance in Gaelic, he died peacefully, and descendants are still to be found.’

Who is Bailie Mackintosh? I think he is father of Provost John. John Mackintosh Provost of Inverness 1794-1797 1800-1803 is my direct ancestor - this was proved when family members received the mackintosh bursary, as they were able to prove their connection to him

Interested to know how you traced your family back to 1179. I've always understood that hereditary surnames were not generally used in England until the end of the 14th century except for the nobility and their use started even later in Scotland and Wales.

Family papers/letters that are held in Edinburgh, There’s a lot of info about my ancestor in National Archives of Scotland, if I remember correctly. Fraser-Mackintosh’s GD index I have still to have a look at the following......

The ‘thoroughly vulgar’ Mackintosh of Farr was probably James who did in fact marry.A younger brother was Simon Fraser Mackintosh never did. He was a lawyer and put together the genealogy of different McIntosh branches - these two bound volumes are today kept in the Manuscripts Department of the NLS

Captain Wm Mackintosh, of the Hindustan Indiaman, youngest son of Angus of
Farr, bequeathed £10,000 now upwards of £26,000 (about 20 years later)
interest of which appointed to the education at Inv. Academy of the boys of
four families of the name Mackintosh, viz Farr, Holm, Dalmigaire and
Kyllachie, or their nearest of Kinn (book of Inverness?)

There are about 6 people/family connection researching this branch/line of Mackintosh's and we are pulling all our info together

On another branch (Mitchell's) I have come across a genealogy written by another ancestor - c1600s where my 6x gt grandmother was lady in waiting to Bonnie prince Charlie's mother before her marriage - she was thrown out of her home by the butcher of Culloden, and taken in by gypsie's and then fled to France, where she stayed until she died
