I have already said that I refuse to allow any more hurricanes to hit Florida this year. I expect Jeanne to miss Florida but I will not have a good fix about how close it will come until tonight. It should miss by between 60 miles and 200 miles to our east. If it is only 60 miles I'm afraid it will hit near Allyn in the Savannah, GA area. It will depend on the strength and movement of the high pressure area to its north. The remnents of Ivan are trying to pull it toward the west at the moment.

Well I certainly hope each of you is spared this heartache again....Gosh, you don't need this happening.

I will say plenty of prayers that Jeanne just disappears and goes away. "Talking to the big guy upstairs heaps lately"..... Hope everything will be ok. *sigh*

As of 092420041300Z, Jeanne is moving west and appears to be slightly weaker. Hopefully, it will turn away and stay offshore, though the NWS doesn't think that will happen. We'll be bringing in the chairs and loose items in a couple of days.

I know I'm sick of them and I'm not even there. My In-Laws home on Hutchinson Island was destroyed completely inside and damaged heavily outside by Francis and I have to go down next week to clean out ruined clothes and furniture. Then the fun job of dealing with the insurance adjusters will come.

Obviuosly we are not looking forward to another soaking of water in through the boards where windows used to be.

Don't deal with the insurance adjuster. Hire your own adjuster to deal with them. They get a % of the settlement and will do better than you in negotiating.

As you all know by now, I try to do my own forecating of these storms free from any political considerations or liability fears that NOAA has to be worried about. Over the years my track record has been pretty good.

Right now the official predictions are pretty grim, and I warn you not to bet the farm on my views, but in the next few fosts I will try to show what I think, and why. I have to break it up due to limitations of the forum on image attachments.

First here is the current predicted track for Jeanne:

The track in the previous post looks pretty bad for many of our members in the area. Now here are the latest computer models for Jeanne. Notice the GFDL model, this is one that holds high regard among many forecasters based upon previous performance.

The final slide folks is a synoptic view of the area showing the steering considerations that determine where a hurricane will go. You will see a strong high pressure area over the Delmarva Peninsula to the north of Jeanne. To the east of that is a weakness caused by the troth between the high pressure system and the other hurricane even further east.

Up until now Jeanne has been moving generally west under the influence of the prevailing winds and the remains of Ivan which has now moved over land and will rapidly weaken. At some point Jeanne will turn northwest, and then more northerly toward that troth previously mentioned and then to the NNE as it is picked up by the prevailing winds.

The big unknown is just where the turn NW will begin and that will determine where the storm track will go. An early turn will keep the center of the storm further off the florida coast. This is a relatively small storm and hurricane force winds extend only about 35 miles from the center.

when you say center you mean that the hurricane force winds strech to a path 70 miles wide? or 35 miles past the outside edge of the eye wall in all directios? never understood whether that was a diameter from wall to wall or what?

Here is a satellite image of Jeanne as of 9:15 EDT tonight. Sorry to report that steering has taken a turn fot the worse. The high north of the storm has moved further east and has forced the projected path back to the west. Note that the eye has become larger, and the storm is likely to increase in intensity a little as it gets over warmer water.

It looks like we're going to feel this one in SC. And it is growing. If the eye rakes the coast, maybe Jeanne will be a Cat 1 by the time it gets to Hilton Head Island and the Bluffton area. Just have to wait and see.

Check out the following for an interesting story and some great photos from inside the eye of Jeanne.

Here is the latest I have on the storm track. The storm should make landfall somewhere near Ft. Pierce this evening. The high pressure to the north has moved further east, and as a result the storm track has been forced more to the west, and is likely to move even a little further west. It will track up the center of the peninsula and essentially follow a course around the high pressure system going back out to sea between Cape Hatteras and Norfolk. The intensity has increased to Category 3, 115MPH. It's looking worse for Vits, better for me, and a little better for Allyn at this point.

I may not have to go down next week. There may not be anything left to fix if this hits Ft. Pierce again. We're on Hutchinson Island, right in front of Ft. Pierce. Beautiful, just friggin beautiful!!!!

It is not looking good for Polk County either Shelly! We will get the hurricane force winds here and with all the debris still lying around from Charley and frances , there is bound to be severe damage after Jeanne hits. My hubby is disconnceting the new TV anatenna we had to replace after Charley and Frances both hit the old one. But I am ready with a fully charged battery operated light/fan/siren lantern, a battery operated color TV/AM/FM portable , a flashlight with an AM/FM radio on it, A personal CD player with AM/FM/TV Bands and all the batteries for items that need them. We also have food stuffs, a grill, a bag of charcoal and fluid to light it , and the freezer is full so it should be ok , if the power goes out like the last time.

The track of Jeanne has shifted further west again. Landfall is still near Ft. Pierce, but the track is now closer to the west coast of Florids after it makes the northward turn.

FT Lauderdale is between Palm Beach amd Miami. It will get some wind and rain, but since it's south of the storm center, the storm surge will be minor and they should not get hit hard.

Mickster, good luck, again!!!

Allyn, i hope you are out of the path now.

Paulr, sorry about your place.

joe, thanks for that bit of research. that's something the world ought to know! perhaps the new CIA director could develop weather agents?

and what about vits? after the last one, he said if another one comes, he was staying put. Yikes!

Thanks Sophie. All we're getting so far in Bluffton is some of the peripheral feeder band rain and some breezy conditions. That's supposed to change in a few hours as the main circulation and rain gets here. The rains are real soakers. And it should blow a bit more during the next 24 hours.

We're somewhat concerned about possible tornadoes tomorrow. When Frances moved inland a couple of weeks ago, a feeder band had a visible tornado that struck Hilton Head Island as a waterspout, then lifted and moved through Bluffton. Only minor damage was reported. But many of us in Bluffton, including me, saw the highly convective wall cloud that generated the waterspout. It passed within a half-mile of me parallel to U.S. 278. It raised the anxiety level here a bit.

I'm more concerned with all of our members in Florida. Vits and many others have been hard hit. I haven't heard how balo and Jack are doing. Mickster, I believe had the eye of Jeanne pass through his county. And miztrial in Winter Haven has experienced the centers of three storms pass through her section of the state. She has to be tired of this.

Whew! Once again we are without power, but I'm beginning to think the whole state of Florida is without power. It hit really hard here in Polk County and I think Lakeland took the brunt of it. Both of my sons have trees down and one tree fell on my youngest son's roof. My neighbor told me that the main drag Hwy 92 is a disaster with power lines down all over the place. My generator is chugging away and finding gas tomorrow may be a problem. We got lucky here in Winter Haven this time, at least where I live. Of course my roof continues to leak and the water was ankle deep in my garage this morning. The lake I live one looked like the ocean with the white caps and waves. It is also now about 5 feet from my patio, I just hope the gators stay out in the middle of the lake! The folks who take care of my 97 year old mother in Indialantic (Melbourne) evacuated her over here for the last one, but this time they decided to stay put. I remember my father would never even think about leaving the island during storms when I was a kid. He liked to go out in the eye of the storm with his chain saw to cut up the cabbage palms that had falled to get those wonderful hearts of palm for salads. This morning they called me and amazingly enough Mother's 100 year old house never lost power! It's been a long and exhausting day here, but we are all thankful to still have a roof (although bits of it are missing) and when you look at the pictures of what other folks are going through, you really count your blessings!

Glad you came through all these storms, Anne, and that you still have a roof, if somewhat leaky. It's time for a drying out period.

My wife's sister-in law has moved from the Christian tower in downtown Winter Haven to northern Ohio. This would have happened anyway due to health reasons, but after Charley, her move was accelerated.

An unrelated question: Do you know the name of the Mexican restaurant about three to four miles south of you that is in an old Popeyes or Wendy's building? They had the best stuffed poblanos I've ever tasted.

There I go thinking about food again!

I assume you mean Jeb Bush. I hear he ordered these storms just to make it difficult for Florida Democrats to get to the polls. As usual, he messed up; they were supposed to concentrate in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

That brings to mind something I came across today. All of these hurricanes could have an affect on voter turnout just weeks from now, possibly causing Florida to once again have some sort of controversy in the elections.

We are still missing Vits...

Vits,

Ok Vits, really starting to worry here. You are about the last if not the last to check in here. All I keep hearing and seeing is how bad Melbourne was hit. According to your post you were only leaving overnight and you would have been back long before now....

Seeing all the destruction in Melbourne has me hoping and praying that everything is ok with you, your family and your home. I will be happy to see you report in, so damn it if you can help it don't drag your feet doing so, please.

Sending lots of prayers your way....

for keeping you out of harms way and in hoping everything is ok for you Vits.

Thinking of you...

Could have been worse. Neighbors report roof tarps gone and re-damage to two of our guest bedrooms, but rest of house intact. The screen enclosure for the pool is totally wrecked, but no trees went down.

We only lost power for two days because of Frances, we will see how long this time. Since we are close to a major commercial area, and our neighborhood lines are underground, I'm hoping only a few days. With power, house will be livable until we can repair the rest.

The good news is that our roofing contractor has already been by, and will make temp repairs tomorrow.

I'm in Atlanta at the moment. My borther-in-law has a major network set up in his basement, so I bought my Dell box, and feel like I'm home.

We are likely to see strong rain from Jeanne here tomorrow.

I hope all our Florida f2f and internet friends are ok.

Jeanne is 118 miles from me in Jacksonville right now. The rain has been coming down in buckets all day and has been intensifying. The wind is out of the east at a steady 40 to 45MPH and gusts to 65MPH. so far I have no damage, just a few small tree limbs down in the yard. Jeanne will come within about 60 miles from here at its closest approach in a few hours, but the central wind speed will drop another 15 to 20MPH by then (I hope). The power went down for abou 30 seconds earlier, but has been holding steady since then. I saw the flash of a power transformer exploding about half an hour ago, but it was not around here. There is a lull in the rain and wind just now so I think i'll go out and check the roof before the next band comes through, while there is still some light. There was one tornado in town so far, about 15 miles from here.

Melbourne got hit very hard. This was a powerful storm, and since it hit south of Melbourne, almost exactly the same spot where Frances hit three weeks ago to the day, but Jeanne was much stronger than Frances. Melbourne was in the part of the storm that had the strongest winds and the bigest storm surge. I'm worried about Vits and anybody else in that area, but the power is down and it will be a while before we can hope to hear anything from them.

I think this is the first time any state has been hit by four major hurricanes in the 300 years we have kept any records, and there are still five weeks left in the hurricane season!

The eye of jeanne passed right over lakeland, yesterday morning around 11:40 am. Power went out at about the same time. Lunch was a sandwich using some of the bread and canned meats we had bought. It stayed fairly cool all day even with the power off but last night was unbearable due to the heat. Sleep was all but impossible. We managed to cook supper on our grill while we sat in the garage with the door raised. It was the only cool spot after night fell. We lost the cedar tree in our front yard. The tree had been given to our son when he helped someone move some things shortly after we moved here. It had been a small twig in a 1 gallon pot. Since then it had developed into a 3 trunk tree about 30 feet tall, made a nice Christmas tree at Christmas time. 2 of the trunks fell, one toward the street on the side of the house and the other trunk fell between the street and the corner of the house. The road is going to have to be repaved soon since the ground under it is pushing out the roadbed with the water that has saturated the ground. Our back yard has a small lake next to our neighbor's fence and the ground is so saturated you sinkdown about 1/2 inch and it goes squish squish as you walk. Other than that , we are all ok here with no structual damage.

We were without power from 1 PM sunday 'till 5 this evening.
We were awakened at 4 AM yesterday when the winds blew a large branch from the conservation behind us into the poolcage. That intial blow was the worst thing except for the 28 hours without power. The next door neighbor has a large pine hanging over their home now...just waiting for a good rain or wind and it'll be into their home.

Things I discovered during and after Jeanne...
a) A 350 VAC UPS is not sufficient to run a Mr. Coffee coffee maker
b) modern waterheaters keep the water heated/warm for 24 hours...that was really nice.
c) The electric companies really DO know where the blown transformers and other equipment outages are without our tying up their phone lines.
d) Modern refrigerator/freezers are very well insulated and do an excellent job of keeping food cold when the power goes out.
e) I'm very glad to see our other Florida stalwarts fared pretty well. Hang in ther Lilly...power crews really are doing well at restoring power.

The power company is doing a fantastic job in Jacksonville. From an initial 250,000 homes without power sunday night the number was cut to 36,000 by 5:00PM this evening. That's way better than they managed after Frances.

Good to hear you came through it alright. A coffee maker draws about 1000 watts while brewing, about four times what your UPS can supply.

I'm really glad to see Miztrial made it through so well. I second that "count your blessings" spirit!

This one definitely had more impact on us than Frances. Numerous friends have lost roofing and as Miz reported after the last one, just getting an estimate is next to impossible.

Stop lights were down and out at many major(and minor) intersections yesterday but the Pasco County Sheriff's Office had them all manned with officers. Even the unmanned ones were being handled with 4 way stops which actually were more efficient than normal stoplight sequencing. Power and lights have been restored to all my local intersections.

One of the largest, local churches had 2 huge oaks split right down the middle on either side of it's main entrance. That was quite a sight. Instead of two 80 foot trees, it looked like four 40 ft. trees. That was a real headscratcher figuring out why both trees would not only split but both sides of both trees go down as they did.

Power seemed to be restored for many of us about 5:15 PM yesterday. I believe one of the main power lines went down and was finally restored. I saw a huge Progress Energy truck hanging wire on one of those humongous masts yesterday afternoon a couple hours before restoration.

The Fire department has been kept busy with fires caused by drunk idiots who use candles and then knock them over or place them near flamable items. Candles are not safe especially when you're reality is chemically altered. Use flashlight and have backup batteries folks...please!

Corky and I are VERY grateful to have fared as well as we did.

We lost power early the first day. Just got it restored today(Tuesday). I can't remember when Jeanne made landfall, I'm a little dizzy from all that's been going on around here. No damage to the house except a few cracked roofing tiles and the darned wind keeps lifting my PVC fence poles from the ground. House is three years old and it's very strong(CBS). We are very secure here. Kathy and I were both born in Miami, so we've seen our share of Hurricanes.
Regards, Jack
