"HDTV vs Bigscreen- any opinions?"

I would like to get an HDTV, cheap model, because the clarity is incredible and most of our tv use is DVD and Xbox/PS2 use. Would gaming cause trouble for the set? Are todays HDTVs just stepping stones for next years technology? I ask that because normal TVs seem to have reached a point where they wont get any bigger, better, or cheaper. Should I hold out for a couple of years while the technology refines itself, or jump in now?
Or should I just get a big normal set?
Does anyone have an HDTV and NOT like it?
Thanks,
Robert

There are limitations to HDTV's, mostly the fact that very little programming is available. DVD technology will stay where its at for quite a while, and can't really take advantage of 1080i or 720p resolutions. There are some nice sets out there for a decent price, my personal favorite is the Pioneer SD-533HD5, a 53 inch HDTV monitor that runs about $2200 bucks. I've seen them quite a few times, once in a home theater and three or four times in shops, and they are very nice considering the relatively low price.

Personally, I'm sticking with my 32 inch JVC, mostly because I've only had it for a year, and its silver, which matches my JVC S-VHS VCR and my soon-to-be JVC DVD Audio player

me personally, i like it ALOT better than those crappy projection screens (Big Screen TVS UGH......) i have a 32 inch widescreen HDTV, and i hook my laptop up to it usin s-video and play my dvd movies on it..... unbelievable picture, killer sound (the dolby digital 5.1 surround sound processor helps out alot on that part tho) my video games look outstanding on it as well.... i would say go ahead and spend the extra money if u can afford it..... u wont be dissapointed....

Well, I'll stack my crappy 55" Toshiba rear projection set against any non HDTV set with a CRT.

THe price of big screen HDTV sets Will drop drastically in the next few years. They have already dropped from an average of $8000 to the current average of $3000. The problem has been the slow growth of HDTV programming, and the fact that almost no cable systems are passing HDTV. This will change when the broadcasters are required to discontinue broadcasting on their present analog channels in 2006.

The increase in production of digital HDTV receivers will allow the price to drop to the levels of present top quality analog standard definition sets, $500 - $2000.

Visit Circuit City and check out Sony's 40-inch XBR series CRT HDTV. Note that the 40-inch is not a true HDTV aspect ratio, but it's still bigger and brighter than most anything I've seen.

Don't remember the price...

Here in Australia we're lagging a bit, we've had digital TV (standard only) for nearly 2 years but not too many people seem interested. I believe there is also the occasional HDTV transmission - not too sure - but I doubt whether many people have the equipment to see it.

Myself? I'm happy with my Seleco DLP projector - not HDTV but watching a DVD on a 6 foot screen is the next best thing.

DLP system projectors are terrific, and HDTV versions are available.

Plasma's are expensive to manufacture yet, and the cost increases almost geometrically as the size increases.

Well, it doesn't sound like there is one overwhelming winner in this contest and when you throw in rear projection and DLP I really don't know what to do! Then today I read that HDTV will only be implemented if 85% of a market can recieve it, and that the current recievers have poor reception. Also, I'm one of the minority in that we don't have cable, got rid of it when our son's communication skills started dropping when all he wanted to do was watch cable.
I think I'll hold off until all the technology and standards stabilize...or at least go take a look at all of the different options at the store.
Thanks

If you presently *need* a new monitor then perhaps the best course of action is to purchase a HDTV ready set...meaning, an external decoder is required for HDTV programming. This way, the overall cost of the new monitor is less and you will still have an outstanding display device.

If you check, most of the better sets have a built-in line doubler for NTSC signals meaning your present-day viewing will be much improved. Additionally, if you're into DVD movies, you will be able to take advantage of the progressive scan output of most DVD players via the component video inputs of the new set. IMHO, the Toshiba "TheaterWide" series and Hitachi's "UltraVision" sets are absolutely stunning.
