452450, a DVD question
Posted by Horatio, Sun Jun-17-07 02:41 AM
I have some old .avi files that my wife downloaded from a movie and news channel that she subscribes to to watch streaming video of the said movies.
She would rather DL them and watch them on the home DVD player rather than her computer.

So, I tried it with two programs DeVeDe in Linux and I also have the paid version of AShampoo burning studio 7.
Both programs claim to be able to convert .avi (and other) video files and burn to DVDs that will play on any home DVD player.

Both programs worked fine, as far as playing the DVDs on a computer.
Put them in the drive and the movie playing software comes up and recognizes them as DVD movies.

But put them in a home DVD player connected to the TV and they simply aren't recognized at all - zero.

Obviously I don't know what I'm doing with this so can anyone tell be what stupid mistake I have made here...thanks..crazy

Try it in more than 1 DVD player. I have 2 home DVD players that won't read a burned DVD while the other 3 I have play them fine. One that does play them fine is my oldest player.

It could be the difference between DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD DL, DVD RW, hell there are so many it confuses me. That's why I like the good ol fashioned CD-R.

thanks Adam,
I only have one DVD player here, it's about 4 or 5 years old and rarely ever gets used. Next time I go over to someone elses house I'll try one of these nice DVDs I made in their player..

Bye the way, the disks I used were DVD+R.

yes, give me plain old CDRs.

Mike,
I spent countless hours doing what you did and the burned dvd disc played on the PC but not on the new Panasonic dvd player. After many trials and errors, I eventually found VSO ConvertXtoDVD to be the most reliable and dependable. (There are similar programs out there, but I found ConvertXtoDVD to be the best.) It's not a freeware, but there is a trial version which you can try.

Link: http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/

If you use torrents - you may not - you will locate it without trouble.

I don't know the technicality of it, but basically VSO converts the format to make it playable with a dvd player. The process is slow and I usually do it before going to sleep and when I wake up the next morning, it is done. Use ConvertXtoDVD to convert the .avi file, then insert DVD disc in the drive, after the conversion process is completed, it will proceed to burn it for you while you sleep. Depending on the length of the movie, the conversion takes an hour or more, and the burn process also takes time. You can burn more than one movie if the total time is less than 4 hours.

It's probably a booktype setting issue. What type of DVD disc are you using? If it's a DVD-RW, trying using a DVD-R/+R instead.

Edit:

We just cross posted. I see you're using DVD+R.... If you have Nero, try changing the booktype to DVD-ROM.

Also here's an old thread that also supports the same idea:

Thank you for that Wes. I will give that program a try although it's a bit pricey for the amount that I would use it. It looks good though.

Chewy, thanks for that link to the other thread..
Hmmm, I have an older Toshiba here (I think it must be about 5 or less years old.) I have only the crippled demo version of Nero which ships with most of these lower priced CD and DVD burners. doubt if it would have that feature. I will go back into the programs I used and look at that booktype setting. I don't remember seeing that.

What files are on the DVD? Should be comprised of IFO, BUP and VOB files.

I just checked two real Hollywood movie DVD's, and the audio folders are empty on them also. Guess they're supposed to be empty?

The file structure looks OK. Yes, the AUDIO_TS folder will be empty.

You require two folders,
Audio_TS (it is always empty)

and Video ( can't recall the exact name of this one - I'm not at my own PC or I could have given the correct names)

I had some words with my wife, she had some paragraphs with me.

Your file structure looks to be right so I would say it is your player as well.I had one player that wouldn't play burnt dvds at all + or -R.They are pretty cheap nowadays I picked one up for 40 bucks not too long ago.

Thanks Guys,
from what you have told me, I think it is probably the player.
I'm going to try one of these disks on another player before I do anything else...:)
