Posted by wlbandy, Sat Dec-30-17 01:44 PM
When I try to open new message, I get a blank page. If I open Computer Forum, I can read each message individually with no problem. This just started couple of days ago.
Any ideas on how to correct this?

Open either Forum (not "Read new") and try setting the entire "Choose classic view" line as shown above and it should work properly - at least it does for me.

Clearing cookies did not fix the problem.
Thanks

In the Updated version of Windows 10, cookies are no longer handled the way they were in the past. Running CCleaner generally only shows a listing for a "deprecated" cookie. If you open the location shown by the deprecated cookie you'll probably see a window that says something to the effect that cookies are now handled differently.

FWIW, even blocking all cookies no longer blocks cookies.

I created a shortcut to C:\Users\Jim8\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache where I can view them and delete them manually.

I'd also close and reopen your browser, and reboot the computer.

That's not a URL. It's the location on my computer where cookies are stored. Yours should be at the same location except for the USER name - in mine, it's "jim8" but, of course, your user name will be something else.

No, I have Win 10 Pro.

Search for INETCookies files - there's probably a lot of them in various locations - most will be empty

Has anyone seen the difference in Cookie handling that I have - especially the CCleaner "deprecated" cookie?

Here's a link to the CCleaner forum discussion of these cookies -

Well, if it's not Cookies, and your Forum settings are as displayed in my first reply above for the entire Classic line, then I'm all out of ideas except to suggest you contact Jason by private message to see if he can help.

I think you can reach him by email at jason@pcqanda.com Hopefully he will check his forum messages as I suspect he gets so few from forum members that he might forget to check. :7

Or, maybe one of the other moderators can provide another way to connect.

Jim.

EDIT: Do you have another computer that you can use to logon to the forum with? If so, sign in, and then set your forum settings as I posted in my first reply, and then see what happens.

I have another computer with same programs, settings, add-ons as this computer and everything works correctly on it. It is just this computer and I can't seem to find the problem.
This computer worked until last Microsoft update, both computers have
Windows 10 Pro(64 bit), one is Dell Desktop that doesn't work. Other is HP Envy Laptop with Windows 10 Pro(64 bit) and same Antivirus, Firewall, and Spyware as the desktop.
Have Norton Security Suite on both computers.
Have 3 plug-ins on both computers with same settings.

Tried both dcf view and classic view, neither worked.

From your computer, try connecting as Administrator, or other user, if you have more users than just the one you regularly use. Set the Classic view line.

AND/OR

Delete all forum cookies, then create a new Forum member name/password. Log in, set the Classic View line, and see if it displays properly.\

564900, RE: Opening message

@KJT - I don't have access to the User account section of the forum, as far as I know only Jason can do that. I don't have any way to contact him other than the email address you already posted. I don't see much point in wlbandy creating a new PCQ&A user account because we already know that it works on another computer and he has the same problem in Edge, Firefox and Chrome. Creating a new PCQ&A user account might prove that it's a cookie problem, but I don't think it is because it affects 3 different browsers on one computer and doesn't affect the other computer.

@wlbandy - Let's take a fresh approach to this problem. It appears that the problem is tied to this computer somehow because you have the same problem with multiple browsers. You have said that the computer worked until the last Microsoft Updates. Microsoft's normal roll out schedule for Windows Updates is the second Tuesday of the month, which would have been January 8, 2018. So I suggest that you try System Restore back to a date before January 8.

If that doesn't work, probably my final suggestion would be to disable all Norton protection, and any other security programs that load at startup, or even uninstall Norton. You can always reinstall it.

Edit - I know you have Norton on the other computer, but it still could have gotten corrupted on the one that's not working.
564906, RE: Opening message
Posted by wlbandy, Sat Jan-27-18 01:50 PM
Turning off Norton did not help.
Don't have a System Restore point earlier as System Protecion was off, don't know how that happened as I didn't turn it off. It is now back on.
I have another email account but didn't want to use it. However, I will establish another account and give that a try.
This is error message I get on IE:

The website cannot display the page

HTTP 500

Most likely causes:
•The website is under maintenance.
•The website has a programming error.

What you can try:

Refresh the page.

One more suggestion...
Install Opera browser. If it asks to import cookies or any other settings from any browser select NO. Then you will have a fresh browser with default settings. I'm guessing that it will behave the same because I believe the problem is with Windows and not the individual browsers.

You can also uninstall Windows Updates. Here's a link with info on how to uninstall both major and typical Windows 10 updates.

New user didn't help.
Removing updates from Jan 8 didn't help either.
Not sure where to go from here.
I know there is a problem on this computer only but haven't been able to find and correct it.
Comparing this computer to one that works doesn't show up any differences, either.
When I post a message, it returns to a blank screen, also.

Try creating another Windows user account, just make it a local account, it won't matter if it's a standard user or administrator. Reboot Windows and log in to the new account. Test for the problem.

If it doesn't work, you can log out of this account, log back in to your normal account and delete the new account you created.

ipconfig /flushdns

netsh winsock reset

This is the link I use to check for new messages: https://www.pcqanda.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=read_new

But I am unclear if you can see New unread messages listed in the new list but get a blank page when you click on one - or if the entire new messages listing is blank.

And, I get a blank page also when I click on your link.

@wlb35 - That link points to a specific thread on the forum with ID number 564799. Is this a link that you have saved as a bookmark or favorite, or did you just post this as an example from a PCQ&A notification email you received?

564799 is this thread.

When I post a message to PC&A I get a message from Windows stating snap this page isn't working yet the post does appear on PCQ&A. I believe this all started after the Windows 10 Cumulative update so it may be a Windows 10 problem.

I didn't state it clearly enough in reply #42 above but that's exactly what happened to me after clicking on your link. Fortunately, I was able to fix it.

If it's not working with Edge, Chrome or Firefox, it's not a browser issue. Check to see if you're PCQ&A Favorites or Bookmarks are still set for no encryption:

http://www.pcqanda.com

If they are, you need to update them to use encryption:

https://www.pcqanda.com

Edit: Also check to make sure the date and time are correct on your computer. If they're more than 24 hours off it can cause problems with secure websites.

If this doesn't work, please list all your active security programs like antivirus, antispyware and firewall. Also list any extensions or add-ons you have in your browsers.

New Information, I can read all messages if I do not log in. Just can't post or reply.
Not a Windows problem because i tried two tablets and a smartphone with android OS, all worked without logging in but gave http 500 error or blank page after log in. Something wrong with log in profile but can't seem to see it. any ideas?

If you can read a new message when not logged in, what happens if you click reply to that message, login, reply and then go back to the new message list?

Are you then able to read new messages from the list, or does the blank page appear again?
