566998, Ethernet port on HP computer died
Posted by Daylilydayzed, Fri Jul-30-21 08:50 PM
The Ethernet Port on my HP computer quit connecting with the internet or modem or router. So I took the hard drive out of it because I have things on the drive I did not want to lose. Then I took money out of my daylily convention fund and bought a new Dell Desktop to replace it. the Dell desktop is smaller than the Hp was. Can I still install the hard drive in the Dell? the operating system on the old hard drive is Windows 7, on the Dell it is Windows 10 , will it still work?

If the Dell computer is truly a new one and not just new to you, then it probably won't boot with the old hard drive. If it's a used model, it may boot, but you won't know until you try. If you want to try it, I recommend that you back up your important data from that old computer first. Windows 7 has been out of support for quite a while, it's time to switch to Windows 10.

On the other hand, a bad ethernet port doesn't mean the end for the old computer. You should be able to add an ethernet adapter, either by an internal slot if it's a desktop computer, or by a USB port. But you really should move away from Windows 7.

The Dell is a new computer with Windows 10. I don't want to boot up to Windows 7, I want to know if I can access it if it is installed in the case.I just want to be able to access the pictures and other information I have on that HP hard drive.

As long as you have the correct boot settings, you should be able to access the files on the old hard drive. I've been running 10 for several years with an old XP drive as a slave. Not a problem.

It would help to know the model of the new Dell computer. If it's a smaller case than the HP, there may not be space for a second hard drive.

Another option may be an external hard drive dock, there are many options available, this is just a sample.

The Dell Sesktop is an Insirpon 3880.I am using my Dell Latitude3350 laptop as the desktop is not currently hooked up and running due to recent remodeling of house. Had to pack everything up as the interior of house was competlely rip out and rebuilt to accommodate my husbands motorized chair. He has bad knees and cannot stand or walk for very long.

Julia,

If you want to access the files you don't want to lose and save them to a thumb drive, put the old hard drive back in the old computer. On your new Dell, burn an image of free Ubuntu flavor of Linux on a CD. Insert the CD and boot off it. You might have to change the booy sequence. "Try Ubuntu Without Installing". It's easy to do and will save your files. Here's the article: https://www.pcworld.com/article/2147063/linux-to-the-rescue-how-ubuntu-can-help-a-computer-in-distress.html
