$19,000.000 toilet

What's your problem? That the USA has a space program? That astronauts have to use the toilet, just like ordinary people? Or that you're buying a Russian system rather than spending even more money designing one of your own?

Well you old fart from down under. If you don't know what the problem is i know you won't understand my explanation so i will not give one.
I spent three weeks in your backward country while in the military in 1967 and if things haven't improved i feel sorry for you. TV was not available to watch but six hours a day,the beer joints closed at 4pm for four hours,i ate at a restaurant and when i finished i asked for dessert and the waitress said "oh you have to go down the street to get that". What a backward bunch of hicks.

Talk about the ugly American! When you sober up you will regret making a fool of yourself. Three weeks hanging around bars made you an expert on a country almost the physical size of the US?

Why you old fool. I am or wasn't drunk . Is this report on Nasa the ramblings of a drunkard?
$13000.00 for each bottle of water.

The ARMY? NASA(?) also developed a military laptop which could be dropped from six feet onto solid concrete and keep on ticking. Wonder how much they cost?

You're an ass.
NASA's budget is stretched extremely thin. I would think that by now they are about as good as Wal-Mart at making a dollar stretch. Master accountants, I'm sure they are.
You nor I even compare to the pH D's of NASA, if that's how much it costs, then I'm sure they did everything they can to get the cheapest price for what they need.
Now taxpayers paying for this is a different story, NASA's long overdue for privatization.

1967 you say? I may have found my father.
I was in New York City last week staying (unfortunately) at the Milford Plaza Hotel, one block from Times Square. I called down and asked for a cup of coffee. They told me I had to go over the road for one of those. I found it very endearing. I hope in 40 years I won't be old and bitter enough to let that rule my total view of the United States of America.

For 25 years the space program has done well without a 19 million dollar toilet. Where is the justification for the astronomical cost? I do not oppose the space program, but these unreasonable expenditures I do oppose. 19 million dollars would buy a lot of depends. Now I will be looking forward to the response from some that will tell me how stupid I am,have at it. If it makes you feel good !

If that's what you make of and interpret my comments as ,then so be it,I expected nothing less from a bitter old disgruntled jealous man .What was your U.S. tax liability for the 2006 tax year ? I Worked at the Marshall Space Center In Huntsville Alabama for 8 years, and have known that an O ring that could have been purchased locally for 97 cents, was procured from a company half way across the Country for over $200 . I am talking about mismanagement and waste in this Country which doesn't cost you a damn thing. Doesn't have a damn thing to do with my knowledge of toilets in space ,or anywhere else. x(

You're not defending a thing. How damn many times do I have to say that it has nothing to do with the accomplishments. It has to do with the waste and mismanagement, fraud . You have no dog in the fight, for you provide no support, and we Americans do take pride in all that is accomplished . Like providing aid to the entire World, and then getting slapped in the face by a holes like you for doing so. Call my disapproval of how the NASA budget is managed whining if you wish, however you don't have a clue as what in the hell you are talking about,I been there and done that. 133918, RE: Your tax dollars Posted by Shelly, Sat Jul-07-07 05:24 PM
When the success of a mission costing hundreds of millions of dollars, and the lives of human crews is dependent upon the reliable functioning of every part of the spacecraft, we do not buy those parts from the local Ace Hardware store. The specifications for every part used, and the test procedures required run hundreds of pages each.
My work for NASA was as a provider of such parts and assemblies. Anyone involved with NASA understood and took pride in doing their job as best as humanly possible. Every part has to be able to withstand the harsh conditions of space, the temperature extremes, the hard vacuum, and the radiation spectrum and intensity.
In the time I was involved in our Moon program, NASA was run from the top down by scientists and engineers, our successes in space were legendary. Today NASA is run by politicians, political hacks, and bean counters. It is now a miracle we have the successes we do.
Of course, there is waste in the space program. There always has been instances of poor judgment in trying to keep projects on schedule. There has always been pressure from politicians to bring business to their constituents and financial contributors. And there have always been low level employees who just thought it was a job and didn't get the can do big picture.
Now our space program must be privatized. The simple truth is that many of the brightest and most innovative people will no longer consider working for NASA.

Completely off-topic, but do some research on the comparitive aid per capita provided by the USA and Australia, by government, corporate and private citizens after the Boxing Day tsunami.
And I have NEVER criticised the USA for providing aid to anyone. Invading a country on the strength of a lie is not providing aid.

NASA Buys $19 Million Toilet System
Jul 5, 10:06 PM (ET)
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - In space, a loo costs a lot.
NASA has agreed to pay $19 million for a Russian-built toilet system for the international space station. The figure may sound astronomical for a toilet in space, but NASA officials said it was cheaper than building their own.
"It's akin to building a municipal treatment center on Earth," NASA spokeswoman Lynnette Madison said Thursday, explaining the cost of the new toilet system.
Also, astronauts are familiar with how it works since it's similar to one already in use at the space station. The new system will be able to transfer urine to a device that can produce drinking water.
The new system is scheduled to be delivered to the U.S. side of the space station in 2008. It will offer more privacy than the old toilet system, which will definitely be needed: The space station crew is expected to grow from three to six people by 2009.
The system will be installed on the American side, and the current toilet system on the Russian side will remain in place.
The space station toilet physically resembles those used on Earth, except it has leg restraints and thigh bars to keep astronauts and cosmonauts in place. Fans suck waste into the commode. Crew members also have individual urine funnels which are attached to hoses, and the urine is deposited into a wastewater tank.
Crew members using the current toilet system on the Russian side must transfer tanks of their urine to a cargo ship, which burns up in Earth's atmosphere once undocked from the station.
The $19 million toilet system was part of a larger contract valued at $46 million that NASA signed this week with RSC Energia, a Russian aerospace company. The extra equipment includes software updates for the station's inventory management system, a spare air pump and engineering support for a mechanism which allows space shuttles to dock with the space station.

|
133908, RE: Your tax dollars Posted by npmcl, Sat Jul-07-07 03:05 PM
Yes, thinking about it, all water is constantly naturally recycled though probably over an immense time span.
|
133916, RE: Your tax dollars Posted by Shelly, Sat Jul-07-07 04:49 PM
NASA has been recycling crew urine for decades, as has the Russian space program on the MIR space station. This is nothing new and fairly simple to do on a small scale. Water is heavy, and it still costs about a thousand dollars a pound to lift anything into orbit.
All water on earth has been recycled, both fresh and salt water have been on the planet for billions of years. Nearly all our water was deposited here by comet impact during the youth of the solar system.
The water in the Floridan Aquifer, the huge underground artisian fresh water sea about 1000 feet below ground that provides most of the water we drink in Florida and a few other states. has been determined to be about 100 million years old. Some time ago they injected tracer dye into the Floridan to measure its speed of movement between wells in order to estimate its age. Obviously, that means that the water we now drink was once pissed in by dinosaurs. There has been very little new water added to our planet in a very long time.

I didn't see anything wrong with post #1. I think it was post #2 that started it.
At the same time I don't think anyone should denigrate someone for being pissed off about spending 19 million on a toilet.
Americans have a right to know what their tax dollars are being spent on. And being pissed about NASA shouldn't be a reason to ridicule someone for. The majority of Americans feel this way about their tax dollars going up in space.
