That simplistic analysis ignores the fanatical right-wing military takeover of Japanese foreign policy in the 1920s and 1930s, which led to brutal invasions of China and Mongolia, a continuation of the rape of Korea, and a clearly signaled intention of a like seizure of resources in SouthEast Asia. The military assassinated ANYONE in the Japanese government who exhibited any anti-war tendencies. Even the Emperor was intimidated into acquiescence.
Sure, the U.S. (plus British and Dutch) arrogant Western "tell the Wogs what to do" attitude convinced Japan to pull the trigger when they did, but the conflict was a matter of time thanks to militant Japanese expansionism.
