The US entered the war with about 250,000 men under arms. That alone shows that we were ill prepared for a war, and American public sentiment was decidedly isolationist, with no desire to become involved. The attack on Pearl Harbor changed all that.
The world can be thankful that we had those two prototype atomic bombs, and that Truman had the courage to use them. The war in the pacific otherwise would have dragged on for years, Millions of Japanese and Allied forces would have died, and all of Japan would have been a smoldering ruin. The bombs were a bargain for both us and Japan. We should reflect on how history might have been changed if Germany or Japan had developed the bomb first.
