"XP Compatability"

Does anyone know about any incompatibilities between XP Pro and .avi compression files?
I ask because i run XP Pro with Windows Media Player for XP and have borrowed several video files on CD from a friend. They play fine on his machine running Win 98 SE and an older version of Media PLayer (6 or something i think)!, but some of them wont play on my machine!!!
Ive installed all the codecs he reccomended (and all the ones he has) but still some wont play on my machine whereas they play fine on his.
Some of the video files when opened play the soundtrack, but not the picture! (strange)!
He said he has heard of a problem between XP and some video files compressed with certain codecs. Anyone else heard of this problem?

Any help appreciated.

Not true, your problem is that you still do not have a needed codec, there are many, if your movies are Divx try the latest codec, there are several codecs around the Internet and you need exactly the same one your movie was encoded with or one that is compatible with that codec.

how do i find out what codec i need and where to get it?
Ive got an "smr", "DivX codec vr3.1", "DivX codec vr4.1" already installed. The weird factor is that some of the video files ive borrowed are in two files (due to their size) and one of the files plays perfect and the other only plays the soundtrack yet both play fine on my friends computer. Does this still sound like a missing codec?

Thanks again

No it doesn't sound like a codec problem, if the two parts are encoded the same and one can be played ant not the other one, there is a problem with one of the files, even if the same CD can be played in your friend computer, not all CD players are created equal, so maybe your CD player has a problem reading that CD.
