First thing: is there a floppy in the drive?

Next, at what point in the installation does the problem occur? Does it happen straight away, or does the CD boot and allow the installation to start?

Yes to the floppy and no to the disk from the harddrive. he said that an error message occurred. After the post dos loads and the himem error occurs, he was trying to jumpstart windows XP by loading dos. He want to go get the disk drive cleaned off and reformatted. Is this expensive? Thank you for replying :]

Sounds like he's not following the correct install procedure. The bios should be set to boot from the XP CD and not a floppy disk. DOS is not installed and can be removed during the proper install by deleting.

You do not use a floppy to install XP. Pleas read the install instructions above.

Are there... 'issues' with the XP installation CD? Was it known to have worked properly before? This IS a legal, commercial copy, right?

Yes,its a legal copy; he said it was an OEM from fry's electronics. Should he just try to reboot with XP and go from there.

Follow the links given to you above and make sure the computer is set to boot from the CD before the hard drive.

Turn on the PC, and insert the XP CD. It will start running XP setup, and get you to the point where you can reformat the hard drive. You can then install XP.

The "NTLDR missing" message is occuring because the PC is looking for the XP boot files on the floppy in the drive.

Go into your bios and set the boot sequence to CD as the first device then restart. Follow the onscreen instructions to install Windows. When you see this screen;

select "D" (sans quotes) to delete the partition and continue to follow instructions.

Now that we've concluded that the CD is a legal OEM (and isn't irreparably scratched or sth), every thing that you - the original poster - should need to start over again is right here. Don't miss the forest for the trees.

Let it format NTFS (do not use the quick format). And yes, the line that says "Disk 0" is good. It means the first disk (offset by 1 which is zero). Note: set the partition size to a percentage. That way, you can create a partition for Windows XP and later after install, setup a second partition for your data.

I might add, when you start up the system with the CD drive as the first boot drive and the XP CD in the CD drive, you will probably see a message on the screen asking if the computer should boot from the CD, something like "Press any key to boot from the bootable CD-ROM". You have to be fairly quick because the message doesn't usually stay on the screen very long.

I do recommend a UPS (battery backup) especially if you have any power fluctuations. A UPS is a must to enable safe computing and is never mentioned when a user is investing in a home computer. It can save your bacon. You can get a good one for around $100 at any CompUSA or equivalent store. APC or Belkin make very good ones for the home.
