when I check to see if any updates are available I find a critical update. An icon tells me it is ready to install but when I try it fails to complete installation. If I download it from the internet it downloads quite normally; its quick but when it tries to install it takes forever and the install fails. I have Norton 2004, and Norton Utilities and Ad-aware and Spy-bot installed. Could any of these prevent installation. I could use some advice. Much thanks, I hate ME , can I do a dirty install of XP? Jim

Try to close all your programs that are running in the background, ie Norton Utilities. If it were me I'd close all your Norton Utilities except for NAV. Make sure your screen saver is off as well if you are using one.
Also what update are you trying to get. Sometimes they do take a long time to install especially if you are getting mulitiple updates at the same time.
About XP-we need to have your system info, ie Ram etc. Hope this helps,
