Hi,

What happened to those of us in the UK.

The countries list does not list us any more.

I am sorry about the exchange rate, but that is no reason not to let us have important security upgrades.

I can't see Britain or UK listed on "Outside the US and Canada" on the first page. Have we been deleted? Just checked the MS Security UK site but the CD isn't mentioned.

I guess I want to know if I order this CD, will the one CD have the updates for all of the OS's listed (98, 98SE, ME, 2000, and XP)?

Or does the site scan your computer and sees, you have 2000! And when you order, you get a CD with only the 2000 updates.

It really isn't clear if you get them all or just the one that is on the computer you are ordering from.

Also, I wonder if the CD runs like an offline version of Windows Update to determine which updates to install and then installs them for you. And, I wonder if this CD can be copied and redistributed. There are a lot of question marks.

Thanks Beninio, it says that I need to have NET Passport installed to get the "Resource Kit", is that the CD?. Should I install NET Passport, haven't ever needed it before, haven't even heard of it before? I did a search and saw that it was supposed to facilitate buying online but I thought this CD was free although it doesn't say that on the UK site. Can anyone advise please?

Any other UK users ordered this CD?

you don't need to have .NET installed - you just need a .NET Passport like a hotmail addy.
I just ticked the box, pressed 'Sign In' then clicked on the right where it says I have a .NET passport and I just had to put my name and address in to complete the order - I didn't actually give my sign in info but maybe that's because I'm signed into Messenger.
Just get yourself a hotmail addy and then get it if it doesn't work when you press 'I have a passport' or whatever it says. No bigee.
CD on the way

OK I've ordered the CD, I had to sign up to Net Passport to get it, made sure that I said no to all the contact options. I wonder if this only applies to the UK, nobody else has mentioned it. Thanks for help.

Hi All: It says that it comes bundled with "Free antivirus and firewall trial software". I wonder how it's integrated into the Updates? Just thought that maybe you "HAVE" to install the the Junk Software to Install the Updates. I don"t trust MicroSoft, and I am wary of Free lunches. Just the same, I Ordered One. Just my 2 cents.

Also notice that when you agree to receive the CD you agree to receive email from MS. Whether that's just to cover the confirmation email or gives them permission to continue sending emails unless you request them not to isn't clear to me.

This might be why the UK version is separate. Under new laws MS has to ask us whether we want to receive any email, post or phone info from them or their partners, there are about five items and we can say no to all of them, I just hope that it works!

Some of you are all making a big deal over nothing. Any time you do business with any company they have the right to contact you under the do not call regulations. If you do not wish to be contacted, don't do business with anybody, on the internet or any other way.

It seems MS can not even give something away, without even a shipping charge, without being accused of some sinister motive! I have always trusted MS and have never been taken advantage of by them. If anyone does not trust them, nobody is forcing you to do business with them. Switch to Linux and quit whining about big bad Bill. What do you suppose it will cost them to ship out fifty million or so free CD's? Name me any other company on Earth that would do it, with no possinle way of making a buck from it.

That's just silly! When I or anybody else are offered the opportunity to accept or reject any future contact (advertising?) from a company with which we're doing business then we're within our rights to reject it if we wish.

The Do Not Call Law passed in the US contains a loophole that alows any company with which you have "an established business relationship" to call you for up to 18 months after the last contact you made with that company, without them being subject to a fine.

My questions seem to have gotten lost in the mix. I was hoping someone would know the answers. So, I will ask them again.

I'm assuming they're the same basic CD they are sending out but on the UK site it says -

The Windows® Security Update CD contains security updates released by Microsoft through to 15 October 2003 for the Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 and Windows Me operating systems. It’s particularly useful if you use a dial-up connection, as you can install all updates in one session without tying up your phone line. Once installed, you can then maintain the stability, security and reliability of your system by enabling Automatic Updates, to make sure your computer is kept fully updated.

From that the UK version at least sounds like it's for all flavours of Windows, which makes sense. There's no mention of the trial Antivirus or the Firewall though on the UK site hence my reluctance to say it's the same CD.

It also says on the UK site "Please note that the Windows Security Update CD can only be obtained within the United Kingdom and Ireland." so maybe there is something different about it.

I have ordered this CD . Now I must ask if we keep our critical updates up to date, do we still need this CD???????????????????

Also, can the one CD be used on two different PC's(I assume it can)?

I think you're right and my take is that it's to save you DL time for the occasions that you might have to re-load your OS. And when you start with a new install, it's not up to date.

Don't think they'd lock something that's free.

Microsoft Readies Security Update CDs

Disc provides dial-up users with necessary patches, but lacks the latest fixes.

Joris Evers, IDG News Service
Thursday, February 19, 2004
Microsoft has started taking orders for the Windows Security Update CD, a disc with all critical updates released through October 2003 for various Windows versions.

The CD-ROM is meant especially for Windows users with slow, dial-up Internet connections that can make downloading updates a nightmare. However, because the disc offers updates only through October 15, 2003, Microsoft still recommends users go to the Windows Update Web site to get the latest updates, the company says in a statement.

The move to make update discs available worldwide follows an initiative by Microsoft in Japan where thousands of security update CDs were given away last year in the wake of a spate of virus and worm attacks.

Added Bonuses
Users in various countries can order the Windows Security Update CD at no cost; shipping will take between two and four weeks. As a bonus, the disc includes information on PC protection and free trial versions of antivirus and firewall software, according to the Microsoft Web site.

The disc is currently available only in select countries. These include the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and several countries in Asia, including Japan, India, and China. The only European country in which the CD is offered is the U.K. It will be available in other countries and other languages beginning February 23, Microsoft says.

The Windows Security Update CD is available for Windows XP, Windows Millennium Edition (ME), Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE).

OK, then I wonder if it automatically detects the ones that you need to install, lets you choose which ones you want, and then install them for you (like the online Windows Update).

And I wonder if you can make copies of it and give them away to others. I am a member of a users group. This would be a God-send for many of the other members of the group that don't do the updates even though we keep telling them to do it. Many of them are just common everyday computer owners that don't follow the precautions we tell them they should, especially if it means something that is going to take a long time to do. We could tell them all to order the CD; but, I bet we would get many more to actually get the disc and use it if we hand them a CD.
