I didn't need a wireless network, but wanted to learn how to set one up. I have a D-link 624 router and the D-link DWL-520 wireless adapter card. I got the router set up several weeks ago on the new (XP Pro) machine, and had a CAT5 cable going to the old Dell (which was running Win98SE). I got to the point that I wanted to install the wireless card, and the instructions said here's how to do it with XP, for 98 read this Microsoft KB. Yikes -- I decided that I needed to upgrade the OS and quickly.
I found XP Home at a super low price ($50) and finally installed it this weekend. Then I upgraded the RAM to the max allowed by the MB (768 MB). Extra RAM solved the "hang at boot problem" that the old Dell started when it was still running Win98SE. System seemed to be stable, so I decided to remove the CAT5 umbilical cord and install the wireless adapter card last night.
Magic happens! I have a wireless network. Setting up file and print sharing was painless.
I also wanted WPA, even though the router didn't have it "out of the box." I installed a MS SP-2 patch (KB893357) to both computers, flashed the firmware on the router and updated the wireless card drivers.
I have earned a few more credits toward my advanced geekette degree.
