"Connecting Kodak camera to computer ??"
Sun Aug-12-07 03:55 AM by 81 Newbee

Old(like me)friend just called me with a problem and doesn't accept my suggestion, so here some help is needed. He tells me he bought a Kodak C763 camera. He can not hook it up to his old computer( running W98)When he inserts the kodak Easy Share CD the computer gives a message that it can't install the software.I suggested he use the USB cable that came with it and load the pictures and use any other program that handles photos to process them.He is "afraid" because the start up guide clearly says"Do not hook up any cables before the software is installed"
What say gals and Guys ?? I have looked to download earlier versions(His CD is version 6.2) but don't see them at Kodak. Is my suggestion bad or does anyone have a CD with an earlier version that they do not need that will work on W98?In the meantime I am heading to the net to see what I can find.Any help is appreciated!
Edit I am looking at Topic448483 from april (found in searck of "Kodak") maybe some help there !

You are right. No need of manufacturer's software to download photos in PC.You can use the USB cable to transfer the picture and use the existing image program to edit/view pictures.

KODAK EASYSHARE Software 5.2 Win 98 version

Or you can use the USB cable and download Irfanview to view / edit your
pictures...bypassing the horrid and intrusive Kodak software...

You may not need the Kodak software, but with Win98 (& hopefully it is Win98 SE at that) & USB, you likely will need a driver installed.

And in that respect, you should follow the manual, & install the driver first, & then plug in the camera.

Or you could get lucky & it would just work (though I'd think not). Or maybe a "universal" USB driver might work?

Thank you all,I visited him today with the intention of downloading the lower version that works on W98( not able to be copied to a CD on another computer)
I was surprised to find an IBM Aptiva with a 3 ,yes 3 gig hard drive and not connected to the net since a dispute with AOL led to his canceling it.I found that he can buy the lower level CD from Kodak for about 7 bucks. He is considering it.I suggested replacing his computer. He has Quicken on it and does a lot on it .
His printer is an old one that only prints in black and white and he loves it but, obviously, it will not print his pictures from his new camera. He was using a 12" monitor(color) so I replaced that with a spare 17" one I had.As for his use of quicken he thinks ,if he gets another computer he may keep his old one just for that or "maybe"tranfer to his newer one(I may be back here about that later)
I have convinced him that he won't have room for a lot of pictures on his current machine.I tried to discourage him paying 7 dollars for the CD to put the program on his computer. He was paying more for is AOL than I pay for DSL and they raised his rate ,so he canceled (He used it very little). He had a tough time getting it canceled and has not gotten another invoice lately. This is a learning experience for me as well as for him.

There are so many things here I would like gripe to him about.

So I'll just focus on the Quicken part.

Tell your friend to make sure to move his quicken backup file somewhere off of his computer. Either to a disc or USB drive.

I wouldn't trust highly important and valuable Quicken data on a computer that old. Any day now he'll wake up to see that old computer done for.

Thanks,When I get a chance to see him again ,I will try to move his files to a CD if at all possible.I guess I need to look at Quicken to understand what I need to do .You used "back up files".Is there a particular set of files or do I need to download all his Quicken Files.I don't know the Quicken programs working methods etc.Your suggestions would be appreciated !

Under File in the toolbar there is the "Backup" option. Just click it and follow the directions. If you're going to use a flash drive, put it first.

Thanks Bob!My flash drive is only a 512 .Is there an easy way to see how large the files(total) are before I insert the drive for the backup. It is either that or CDs.......?

If we're talking about a lot of pics, 512MB might not be enough. There're plenty of 2 GB drives being advertised for about $20. Might consider one of those.

No pictures yet,Bob.What started the post was his inability to load the software that came with his camera.I am trying to convince him to get a new or used better computer computer because his Aptiva(win98) with a 3 gig HD was not good enough. What I am looking to save now is his "Quicken files.

Then you should be OK. I've got my Quicken backup on a 512MB stick and they take up less than 20MB.

Thanks Bob.I know little ,if anything, about Quicken so I have no idea what I should be looking for to back up his files.Any tips will be appreciated !
If he gets a new computer and installs Quicken ,will the backup files be accepted even if it is a later version ?I am in the dark on this and my friend, although he uses the program is even less knowledegable than I !

I've upgraded twice until I got tired of the increasing bloat in Quicken. I'm now running Q 2004. When it asks you what you want to backup, look for the file QData1, select it and then direct it to the drive letter for your flash. Click OK and it should proceed without problem. You can restore by just clicking the Restore Backup under File after installing the program on the new PC. Frankly, I'd just use the old program instead of going to a new one.

One more thing. If he gets a new computer with Vista what are the possibilities that his older "Quicken" will not run on Vista?
I don't know what version he has but will check !

I don't know about that. Intuit's web site should be able to answer that. If he has to get the new version just get the Quicken Basic. Probably won't need all the bloat that comes with the Deluxe version.

Great progress.Visited today and opened his Quicken folders and was going to download his files to my flash drive. To make it short, there was a "backup" part in the program which made it possible for me to back up to a floppy .Ran it ,and all went well.He now has a backup on a floppy. He does not want to get a new computer right now ,but wants to use the picture frame he got . I set that up and showed him how to take the SD card from the camera and put it in the frame and run a slide show.Good day ..This thread has has changed course so I am going to start a new one on what it has evolved too.I will need help on that to .I will post it later under"Refresh Older Computer Worthwhile ??"Thanks to all !

I have the same camera and the dock. I have had problems with the software working sonce day one. Go to kodak and find the clear utility to uninstall EVERYthing kodak and start from scratch.Do not plug the cam / usb . or anything in until done.
Restrt pc and plug in Camera after. it should find and install for you. I have had to do mine a few times. Do not know why. HAve also tried software off of site and cd as well. There is also firmware you might need listed on kodak.com.

Thanks, but his PC is not capable of loading the LEVEL of the software that came with the camera and is really too old and drive size restricted to make it worth while buying the lower level one.
My Grandkids and one of my sons have Kodak cameras and use the Kodak software as well. It is great for what they do.I have other graphic programs and the Kodak software on my PC .It causes an occasional conflict sometimes, but I have learned to work them out. Thanks again
