"[need to buy] AGP video card and soon"

My main computer has an AGP slot and the really low-end video card I purchased died months ago and the "who knows what" PCI interface video card was added from the "parts" box. I am starting to get ghosts and overlays on the desktop when I move from one thing to another. I have to get a new APG card and don't want to spend more than around $100 for it (less is nice). I don't want a card with the Nvidia chipset so I assume I am limited to ATI. I thought I found a good card on NewEgg, but but the reviews indicated a problem with drivers.

No gaming, no video editing; I use Corel programs for graphic editing, but not often.

My board only supports AGP or PCI cards, so prefer an AGP card.

Suggestions please.

I know that Tiger Direct doesn't have the greatest reputation but they have a plethora of AGP cards listed. I've ordered from them for friends with older systems with no problems.

Thanks Peter, but I don't order from TigerDirect. I have ordered from them in past, but had a problem with a less than $50 item and went back to get an RMA -- found out that I had to deal with the manufacturer. My time is worth a lot, so didn't bother.

I just browsed through the AGP cards at NewEgg quickly. This one looked good to me, not expensive, ATI chipset, no fan(no noise), analog, DVI and S-video outputs. Got good reviews too.

ATi, problem with drivers? Say it ain't so!

You'll probably have better luck in a smaller store. They'll have product on the shelf longer. You can get a reliable 256mb AGP card for around CDN $100 I'm sure.

What card did you find on NewEgg Marti?

ATI drivers are rock solid...as long as you install the ones before AMD took over. Not kidding. Latest drivers from AMD\ATI are crappola. The ones supplied on the CD will probably be fine.

The 7X series after a certain point are buggy. Nothing but a PITA.

But as stated, earlier drivers work fine, as will the CD drivers and there is always OMEGA drivers.

Edit: Saphirre makes some fine cards. Top quality.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103048 In the customer reviews someone said "ATI does not support the HD2xxx chipset on AGP any more with the ""Windows Hardware Qualified"" drivers." The next review also mentions driver problems.

Just installed an ATI Sapphire PCI card and it's great. Paid only $35, with shipping, from Newegg. No fan, no noise!

1: WHQL certifed drivers are drivers that the mfg has tested by Microsoft to meet there standards. This cost a LOT of money and does not mean the drivers are necessarily better. Sind AGP is not being developed any more, a mfg is not going to waste money by getting their drivers tested for MS certification.

In fact the highest performing drivers are often the " Unified ( not Beta ) drivers that mfg's develop because they can operate outside of MS's rather conservative standards. Unified drivers are often preferred by gamers because they will often produce higher FPS, at the possible risk of some artifacts when pushed to the limit or when overclocked. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with using " Unified" drivers taht are not WHQL certifed.

The standard CD-Rom drivers usually work just fine. It is when owners start trying to upgrade drivers that they run into probelms. And yes the newer ATI drivers ( AMD developed ) have cause some issues. Especially the drivers from revisons 7.9 to 7.12. The solution? Don't use those drivers. BTW, NVIDIA went through a horrible period with their drivers a few years ago. Same problem that AMD/ATI is having now. Their top engineers got stolen by the " other" mfg.

2: I would not recommend ANY ATI 2X00 series of cards. They are power hogs, run hot and are over kill for your system.

Instead I would recommend a Saphirre 9600 series of card. This will be more than adequate for what you want. With a 9600 series you will get a a card that is cool running, has much, much lower power consumption, ROCK SOLID performance and ROCK SOLID STABLE drivers. Just use the drivers on the CD as I mentioned. Video qulity is awsome and of course it cones with VGA, DVI and S video output.

I have a Saphirre 9600 Pro and it is a great card. I'm not a big gammer, just like you. But this card just works. Period. Zero issues after probably 5 years of running. I would not recommend ANY of the ATI 2X series of cards for your machine.

TTech recommended an ATI 9550 series of card. There is a reason he did so, and the reasons are probably similiar to what I said.

EDIT: Crap...NewEgg does not have any Saphiire 9X series cards listed any more. IMHO, a 9600 series is slightly superior to a 9550 series. Especially if you pick a Pro model. PowerColor does have a couple of ATI 9600 series. This one looks nice and it has a 2 year warranty.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131262

Here are some other choices for the 9X series of card at NewEgg:

The card I bought (mentioned above) is a Sapphire Radeon 9250. It has VGA and DVI outputs, plus S Video. Newegg should still be selling this model. It's cheap and very good.

You could substitute "Chevy" and "Ford" for "ATI" and "Nvidia". The debate over which is better will never end.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, guys. Unfortunately, many of the suggested cards at New Egg are "out of stock," so have to pick from the available ones.

marti, I recently upgraded my video card for one that would be suitable for Vista, should I ever decide to go that route, and because I'll soon be getting a new, more up-to-date MB. You are welcome to my ATI CATALYST AGP-type card, if you can use it. This is an ATI RADEON 9550 VPU, 250Mhz VPU Core, AGP Bus, 128MB Graphics DDR memory, 64-bit memory pathAPI support Direct-X 9.0, Connectors: VGA,DVI-I, TV-out. Never had a problem with it on my XP SP2. Yours if you want it, free as a bird.

jaded

It's my bedtime here, but I'll check back with your post in the morning.

Card arrived and is installed! I used the drivers on the provided CD; I did find newer drivers and will probably install them later tonight or this weekend (I have a full day tomorrow).

As thanks for the card, I doubled the shipping and made another contribution to PCQ&A's funds.

Thanks again, Ray.
