Windows 10 version 1903 for all you version fans.

To check your version, run WINVER from the RUN dialog (Windows key+R). I'm still seeing some Windows 10 systems running version 1803 from early 2018. It's time to install those updates!

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

One of many sites: https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/windows_10.html. Sorry see you already found it, one of those 0 dark thirty things. It is a fairly long update. I usually do mine from a burnt DVD or flash drive so I can use them on other machines.

Do I need the media creation tool, or will MS make it available directly?

Use the Microsoft Media Creator 1903. I don't particularly trust using the online download it offers. You can do it any way you like though. It is always a good idea to make a backup but I didn't this time and it worked out fine. A long installation this time and there are two updates left afterword, .net and Adobe Flash if I remember correctly, a little tired at the moment.

Yesterday I updated from 1809 using the Windows 10 Update Assistant download. It took most of the afternoon/early evening to complete the update with several reboots.

This is what I’ve observed so far -

Old ms games no longer work – will need to find replacements.

Short cut arrows had returned – now gone again.

Hovering delay over taskbar items no longer settable through regedit settings even though the settings are unchanged from
when hovering was delayed - I haven’t found a solution yet for this annoyance.

“Classic start Menu” is still functional despite a popup that says it wasn’t compatible. So far, it is!

Edge Browser needed to be re-blocked by EdgeBlocker.

Login screen picture had been changed - now changed back.

Otherwise, I don't see anything significantly better/different from 1809.

I doubt I will roll back to 1809 just to get MS Games back - but one never knows.

Further updates, if any, as events warrant.

Jim.

Edit- MS games are back - just had to reinstall using "Win7GamesForWin10-Setup.exe".

I just did it through the Windows Insider program took about 30 minutes (ssd) because the iso I got through the Media Creation Tool wouldn't update with a usb drive attached because of a drive reassignment problem with some systems. So that was a catch 22. Build number is 18362.116 (1903)

I just got the same error with an upgrade for my WinBook, Have a HP pro tablet 10 EE G1 That will also have the same problem because it has a borked installation and can not upgrade online. The only access is USB. I will try a burned ISO with my USB DVD, but it will probably throw the same error because it will have a drive letter assigned. Hope they will fix this soon as promised.

I made the mistake of using the Windows 10 Update Assistant download at about 10:00 PM, and was only at 97% finished at 2:30 AM when I went to bed. The update was finished when I got up this morning. I don't see much difference from the previous build, and will have to check it out some more. I retrieved the Win 7 solitaire games from a previous download.

Clearly I have not been spending enough time in forums.

I was under the impression that W10 updates happened automagically. Now I find that all three of our PCs are at version1803.

So:-

How do I go about triggering the updates?

Do I need to do 1809 or can I go direct to 1903?

If I go via USB (seems sensible with three machines to do), is a USB2 stick OK (I have several spares) or do I need USB3? (Australian sticks are expensive and start at 8gb)

I've downloaded both the Media Creation Tools via MajorGeeks.

Hold off on the usb drive there is a problem with some systems that error out with any usb drive attached something about drive letters being reassigned that is supposed to be corrected soon. Although you can try it doesn't hurt anything.

The ISO on a DVD always works. Wonder why thumb drives are so expensive over there, just picked a two pack of SanDisk Cruiser Glide CZ60 32GB for somewhere around $25.00. The directions just specify at least a 8 GB flash drive, not a particular type.

Yeah the iso no longer fits on a standard dvd so that's out.

That seems strange to me I just burnt Win10 1903 64bit on 5/25/19 4.7GB DVD-R to update my desktop. I have a small supply of dual layer disks just in case but rarely have to use them. The ISO was 3.9GB.

Just have the one version on it I guess a while back the one I liked ended up being about 4.4 GB and the media creation tool won't let you use a 4 GB usb drive and doesn't even give the option for dvd anymore.

I guess if you leave the box checked for an upgrade of your PC the ISO will be a lot smaller and still give you all the burning options. I download a new media creator for each new version and keep the DVD just in case there might be an OS problem before the next upgrade and chuck it along with the old Media creator. I have still never run into a problem with ISO size that I can think of. Maybe if you set it for another PC with all flavors of the OS and languages it could become a problem. I generally use DVD-R disks if I can find them 4.7GB but I have also used + disks in the past and then there is always duel layer but they are expensive in my book. Still keep a few around. I have never tried Blue Ray though I can burn them, way out of my ball park.

Yeah I want the one that I can use on a few people's computers as every time there is a major update I end up upgrading a few friends as their laptops always seem to stall out and become unusable as they attempt the upgrade.

With 1903 you need to check for updates. Then if M$ decides it's your turn you'll be offered it. And apparently if you knock it back you'll have to wait seven days before it's offered again.

I've done our two laptops with no apparent problems, but I haven't tackled the desktop yet.
