"Cell Phone"

At age 82 I'm setting up a cell phone for the first time.
My question is when entering a local phone # into the cell phone memory:
1-716-xxx-xxxx
716-xxx-xxxx
Which one of the above examples is the correct way?
Thank You

716-xxx-xxxx is what I have always done unless it's really a long distance number. Your phone will add the +1 in your contact listing and I'm not sure why.
