"ethernet cable disconnect switch"

I like to disconnect from the internet when I am working on documents or using a flash drive. I know I can disable/enable the adapter in network settings but that gets tiresome. creating a shortcut works only for disabling. I cannot enable again.
My husband installed an on/off switch on the ethernet cable and it worked on windows 10 laptop but does not work on my new computer with windows 11. when I turn the switch off I am still connected.
Why? can't figure it out. any suggestions. thanks.

Is your new computer also a laptop? Maybe it automatically switches to wireless whenever you use the on/off switch on the ethernet cable.

Jim.

thanks Jim, No the new one is an all-in-one. Wifi is disabled both on the modem and in adapter settings. the switch just does not kill the ethernet cable. I can not find any switches to buy online.

Airplane mode should do what you want. But I think you are way too paranoid.

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

airplane mode only works for wi fi doesn't it? I have the wi fi permanantly disable in modem settings and adapter. I want to find a switch that will toggle the ethernet cable on and off without disable/enable adapter. thanks

Yep, you're right, airplane mode is only for wifi and Bluetooth.

Thanks. The switch is located exactly as indicated in your diagram. The switch was attached to the solid orange ethernet wire. All other wires in the ethernet cable were left in tact. Worked great on lap top. But windows 11 showed internet connection regardless of switch position.

Is this a home made switch, or something you purchased? It seems odd that it only switches one of the eight lines. If you purchased it can you provide a model number or website for reference?

You probably need to also switch the green wire and maybe the blue wire too for good measure.

This will require a different switch that can switch 3 different lines at once, 3PST instead of the SPST you have now.
