"Malware"

My wife's computer is now infected by popups. Some say critical virus alert, others say Mcafee. The last time I dealt with it by reinstalling Windows 10. I rather avoid it if possible. I tried various free scans. At the end of the scan, they asked for money to remove them.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Did you try Windows Defender?

I checked Windows Defender. It indicated routine scans.
I use Linux and I am not really too familiar with Windows.

Not sure what you mean by "routine scans".
You can set Defender to perform a Full Scan.

My wife suggested cleaning out the history and the Cache. I can't believe it. The popups are gone.
