"I have a Dell laotop that does not recognize my password "

I have a Dell laptop that does not recognize the password I have been using . The last time it recognized it was last Christmas when I used it at my son's place in Virginia. I would like to get things off of it to put on the new laptop I bought to have one that is working. The new one is from NewEgg.com and was a birthday gift I bought for myself.. How can I get the Dell to recognize the password so I can get it back up and running . I plan to give it to the little girl down the street once I get all my info off of it.

Dell and many third party sites show solutions. Dell lists a support phone number for password issues.

My youngest son took the laptop back with him . He is trying to crack the password. If he is not successful he will will reset the computer and I may lose all data but he said he might can reset it with out losing my data.

If there is a chance of data loss, the hard drive could be hooked up to a working computer and the data retrieved, unless it is encrypted.
