"Ethernet adapter switching to PPP adapter by itself"

I hope I can explain this properly. While surfing, my connection stops (I am on a cable hookup), so I click START, RUN, WINIPCFG, and my IP configuration has switched from my Ethernet connection to PPP adapter and all zeros appear as my IP address. I click on the pull down menu and click on my ethernet, my address comes back, I click OK and go back to the page I was looking at and it is still stalled so I go back to WINIPCFG and the PPD adapter is back again. Tried restarting computer and it works for a minute then I am right back to the same problem. Can anyone tell me what is wrong? I did call my service provider a few days ago and asked them and the only suggestion they made was to delete PPP Adapter - well, what about my fax machine? Is this a service provider problem or a computer problem? I have been on a cable connection for about 7 years and have been noticing slower and slower connections or surfing mobility (if that is the right word). Sometimes it is fast, sometimes aggravatingly slow. Does anyone else have this problem? Should I switch to ADSL (like my kids want me to). It would be slower but more consistent.

Thanks.

Grace

That seems just like it should show. You can click the arrow by the PPP adapter and select the NIC and you should get what your settings are. Winipcfg defaults to showing the PPP and you have to scroll to your NIC.
