"Your late night TV habit is depressing (literally)"

Do you sleep with the TV on or your laptop screen lit up? Turn it off, pronto. According to a new study in Molecular Psychology, nighttime brightness could lead to depression.

I don't think we pay nearly enough attention to the Effects of Light or
Darkness on our Mental and Physical Health. It can really mess with our
built in biological clocks. I think it can one of the leading causes of
Depression and Anxiety. Vitamin D is probably at its Core has a lot to do with what effects we may have. (literally)

I know some people that have Smart Phones and they download Sounds like that. Sound machine App. They love it. Claim it really help them to sleep. I use my phone to wake me. Perhaps I can use to get me to sleep.
I have a laptop connected to a 32" TV and I fall asleep watching movies. The screen is set to go off after the movie is over. So I get some of the bad light at night. Not all night.

I'll bet you would like it Mike . I just keep it going all night long . And if you wake up at night you just listen to the waves for a while and go right back to sleep . No tossing around for hours.

I try to remember to use my TV's sleep function. On my laptop and desktop PCs, I use F.lux to modify screen color temperature during nighttime hours. This does help with eyestrain and helps me fall asleep if I've been using the PCs late in the evenings.

I remember "flux" from a few years ago. I am not 100% but I think it was
me that posted that here a few years ago. Where are the miracle search guys? I like that program and forgot all about it.
Thanks AL.

I don't even have a TV in the bedroom. I need the dark and quiet to sleep. That was a point of contention on a recent trip. One of the people rooming with us was in the habit of having a TV on to sleep. Couldn't stand the dark and it was too quiet for her.

I also know a few people that "Need" some kind of light on when they sleep. I prefer Dark but like to watch a movie to fall asleep. My power management is configured for the system to go to sleep as soon as the movie is over. My work hours make watching anything impossible till I am home in bed. Usually I get to watch about 15min of it and I am gone.

I have a radio on the headboard and listen to a local talk radio station which broadcasts "Coast to Coast" all night. I have awoke from a bad dream on occasion to find the talk show host and guest were discussing the subject of the bad dream. e.g. one night I dreamed I was in a haunted mansion and ghosts were after me. That was the subject of discussion going on on the radio. So not only will the light be a problem, the programming can have an effect on your dreams and could be causing subliminal problems when you're awake.

If that were the case with me, I should be a real estate millionaire and be fit as a fiddle. (I hate falling asleep to a good program and waking up to infomercials )

I sometimes leave my laptop on with soft music playing but after
sometime it is rigged to turn off and its far enough away from me where they glow from the screen is not on me.
But yeah, I have wondered about the effects on us from staring at these screens as much as some of us do. Its really not a natural thing to be staring at a glowing thing for many hours a day but often I do. I also have an e-reader that I read from often But I think that is better on the eyes.. because it has a different type of screen.
Black and white and its mostly just text and the screen is realy nice too > like a matter surface with no glare or anything.
I like my Kindle touch e-reader > its small and very portable too.

Shelly, not to be funny but can you explain why you leave your computer
running all the time? Is there a good reason for doing that? If so
what is it? If you do that, I want to know why? You know a hell of a lot
about electronics.

It is running SETI whenever I am not using it for other things.

It also performs all maintenance tasks, backup, malware scans, and some program updates while I sleep.

So you don't to it to protect the electronics. It's just to preform
automatic maintenance so your not bothered by anything while your using it. That's a good reason. Thanks
