First thing: is there a floppy in the drive?

Next, at what point in the installation does the problem occur? Does it happen straight away, or does the CD boot and allow the installation to start?

Yes to the floppy and no to the disk from the harddrive. he said that an error message occurred. After the post dos loads and the himem error occurs, he was trying to jumpstart windows XP by loading dos. He want to go get the disk drive cleaned off and reformatted. Is this expensive? Thank you for replying :]

Sounds like he's not following the correct install procedure. The bios should be set to boot from the XP CD and not a floppy disk. DOS is not installed and can be removed during the proper install by deleting.

You do not use a floppy to install XP. Pleas read the install instructions above.

Right! Tried the cd the ntldr missing message appeared.He then rebooted with a old dos diskette that had dos 6.22. Now an himem.sys error appears and dos load in low mode. Sorry I didn't get that across right.;}

Are there... 'issues' with the XP installation CD? Was it known to have worked properly before? This IS a legal, commercial copy, right?

Yes,its a legal copy; he said it was an OEM from fry's electronics. Should he just try to reboot with XP and go from there.
