On that note I'm heading to sleep. It's late and I'm not happy about what I'm going to be teaching tomorrow . Can I call in sick and get a note from somebody on here?
Beth -- I'll give you one! I've got plenty of leftovers in stock from my teaching days... our board and superintendent "required" a note every time, but they never kept them...
Thanks - I just might ask for some in the future. I still can't believe I have to be the traveling music teacher all day tomorrow. YUCK! I just know the regular teacher won't leave any plans and I'll probably be stuck with the older kids (please shoot me now). Plus I know I'm going to have nightmares about this all night. All I'm asking for is a classroom to call my own, then I promise I'll be happy.
Hmmm. . . what did I get myself into? Instead of 25 kids . . . there are over 6,000 "kids" in this classroom for me to keep an eye on. Too bad I can't get paid and permanently certified in NYS as a teacher for doing this.
I'm sure they'd love more live bodies to feed to the schools there. Thank goodness Jason and I are very happy where we are (close to my family). I don't think I could deal with the demands of living in the NYC area. For now I'm bite my tongue and deal with the building substitute status that I'm in. I'm taking it week by week and looking at the classifieds daily. I don't have to worry about my Master's degree since I finished it this summer. I'm provisionally certified in 3 areas (well 2 of them are pending for another few weeks).
Hi Beth. Nice to meet you. Sounds like you're having your hands full teaching. What do you teach? And what grade(s)? And.....do you like it? Both my parents before they retired were teachers, science and my mom taught band and music. She taught k - 12. I don't think I could've had the patience for that.
Edit: Wow, I forgot the reacson I was posting in the first place. Hi Paul. Glad to see you made it here.
Gravity....not just a good idea, it's the law! My Magic
Currently, I'm a building substitute at a local elementary school. This means that I can be in any location in the building on any given day. Today, I was the music teacher ( he better stay away from me since I'm ready to string him up by the toe nails). Most of the time I'm one of the K-6 classroom teachers or an extra within the building.
I'm provisionally certified to teach in 3 different areas in NYS. These would be (1) PreK to Grade 6 (Elementary), (2) Grades 7-9 in Science (technically a middle level extension in Biology) and (3) Reading Teacher grades K-12.
It's hard to be patient at times, but you learn to be flexible and change plans at the drop of a hat (especially as a building slav, -er I mean substitute). As tough as the kids are some days, the rewards out weigh the stress most of the time. It's so great to have a kid come over and give you a hug for helping them learn something new. It's even better seeing the look on a child's face when they finally get a concept. It's truly amazing to watch children learn and grow during the school year (especially when they're little - say 1st grade). Don't get me wrong, there are still days when teaching is the best form of birth control. You didn't expect that did you?!
On that note, I'm off to look around for some things to take to school with me in case another teacher doesn't leave lesson plans again.
