"Poll-What Operating System Do You Use?"

I'll go first. I use Windows 2000 Professional. Now you!

(This could be useful when someone needs help also, but I think it'll be easier just to ask them again than dig through this, but i'm just curious)

well i had win98se and i loved it but i got win2k advanced server, but it was way to advanced for me. so i traded for win2k pro.
then i dual booted with xp because i didnt think i would like it, but the next day i took off win2k.
although i wouldnt mind having win98se back on there
so i use xp pro

Ability can take you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there

My new sys is currently set up with a dual boot of WinME and WinXP. I left some unallocated space for Mandrake. That'll happen after I get ME and XP tricked out a little more.

Used Win2Kpro forever cause none of the 9x series would work system without crashing all the time. Got tired of it and tried something else. Win2k was great! Now I have XP and am starting to fall in love with it.

OS 9.04, and I am trying to learn Mandrake 7.1.

I have 95, 98SE, and NT4, but I use my other ones most of the time. I am planning on buying XP when I can buy a full version with the first full Service Pack.

Haha, still limping along on the Windows 98 that came with my computer in 1999. I had Linux Red Hat 7.1 installed, but haven't put it back on since the last reformat.
I'm still holding out for a preview copy of Lindows. I'm tempted by all the people raving about XP, but it's hard to shake the feeling that by purchasing it, I'll be telling Mr. Gates that I approve of his "leasing" me the software and keeping tight reins on what I do with it.

...you hit the nail, right on the head. it's all about the activation key. i kinda think, it was released just for that reason! to see if consumers would subscribe to a system, where the consumer had a lesser control over their purchased software. DUH ? in any event! i quess enough consumers did? as for me, until xp actually does something other than it " looks good" or it's the platform of the future. i'am sticking with 98SE. opps almoast forgot this one, and this is the creme of the creme. we should install xp to promote the computer industry! GO FIGURE

OK, this is gonna be long.

System 1- Windows XP Pro
System 2- Windows 2000 Advanced Server
System 3- Linux Mandrake 8.1 and I think there is a copy of Windows 2000 Pro also but I haven't rebooted this machine for months.
System 4- Windows 2000 server, Mandrake 8.2
System 5- Windows 2000 server.
System 6- Windows XP Home Edition.

Some other PCs in the basement from DOS 2.0 to OS/2, Windows 3.1 and an old Apple with System 4 (I used to have a G3 with System 8 but I traded it for a bottle of Whiskey )

Yeah well I got a moment when the evil one wasn't watching and installed UD on her computer too. LOL }> So many darn icons in the task bar that one more won't be noticed anyway.

Indeed I could, considering that two of the systems are double Pentium Factory made Servers that I bought at bargain prices from bankruptcy auctions, and I'm hunting for another one as far as SQL 2000 is included in the package.

On my work system I dual-boot Win98SE and Win2K. (Although I don't really use Win98SE anymore. I'll remove that partition one of these days.)

At home I have one computer running Win98 and the other running Win95. (Yes, Win95. It's an old system and it can be helpful to have that around in case someone has a problem with Win95 and Script Sentry.)

98se and moving to XP Home.

Note: Did you know you can look for an OEM version of Windows XP Home Edition (Full), and find it for as low as $78. They usually want you to buy a mouse or something

Hey, wait a minute I thought you didn't plan on getting XP - I always thought you'd stand your ground against MS and not be assimulated. I guess resistance is futile afterall - if even Grogan has XP now, I guess I'll have to too Wow, looks like Shelly was right (again)!

System 1 Win98se (stable as a brick)
System 2 Win2k (fussy & a pain in the butt but fun to tweak)

I've crashed them both by screwing around with them but W98 is easiest to restore, if necessary, with an image using Drive Image.

I use OS9, put out by Tandy for their upgrade machines. There is some talk about providing an Gui next year. So far though, it's still a command line environment. A new programming language is also provided on the latest version...Called Basic, it's a user friendly, easy to work with software. Though a bit revolutionary, the crisp For,Next loops and the ability to tie the machine up by the hour with IF,THEN, ELSEIF statements and can provide hours on end of computing pleasure for those adventureous individuals wanting to get their feet wet in a challanging programming effort.

I'm using Win98SE and am thinking about a dual boot with Linux and maybe BeOS. I'm not interested in XP and won't be as long as it's spyware for Microsoft.

I have 4 harddrives on my computer, running Win 95, Win98, WinXP and Win2000. Never know when someone is going to ask me to help them fix a os problem. I like XP the best. No problems installing. All hardware and software seems to be running just fine

I use XP home and I’m in digital bliss. I used to use 98se and learned with that system. Having to replace a motherboard, went shopping for one. Checking out Pricewatch.com, found a vendor who said “ I could get a OEM copy of XP home addition if I bought a motherboard, for 82 bucks”. I tried it, glad I did no more blue screens and system crashes plus increased speed. It takes me less then a second to open up Microsoft apps. Best 82 bucks I ever spent on software. Have a spare with 98se on it, but after using XP it’s hard to go back.

If you check out #27 if this thread youll see that Ive been running W2k Pro and Linux mandrake. That is going to change soon. Ive decided to give XP a try. Early on I ran a beta version of XP for a couple of weeks but I didnt like it so much at that time and decided not to go with XP when it was released. Now some time has past and It seems that most people here who have been useing XP have been happy with it. Im glad I waited. I was over at a friends house recently useing XP and started to like it. I always like to wait a while and see how things go plus now that there have been some people around the forum that have been run'n XP for a while There will be a good amount of help available. My exploration with Linux hasnt really gone to well for me. Linux has a lot to offer but it just really isnt for me, so Im no longer going to run Linux. Im gearing up for XP and plan to get it installed sometime this week. Im not sure weather to dual boot with w2k or just run XP exclusively. I really kind of like haveing just one OS managing everything but on the other hand a dual boot can come in handy when one OS is haveing problems. Any suggestions would be great. Ill be backing up all my stuff the next few days and I might even install a new second HD before I get XP and install it. Plus I need to go over the compatability list for XP and see what software I may need to upgrade. XP here I come

Well, I haven't bothered doing a statistical analysis, but after reading this long thread, it seems that XP is already a success among our astute little family here. Even among those that swore a few monts ago that they would never buy XP.

Oh,I use XP HE at home, 98SE on my laptop, 98SE at work in my office(soon to be changed to XP), and 98SE in my test laboratory at work.

On the shelf in my den, I have every OS from MS since DOS 1.1, except Me, NT3X and NT4, and the early Windows attempts before W3.1. I also have CP/M kicking around somewhere.

hi shelly,

what exactly does CP/M stand for, who made it and what was it like to use it? was it completely command-line based?

CP/M stands for Control Program/Monitor. It was an operating system developed in the 1970's by Digital Research for micro computers. It was mostly replaced in the 1980's by DOS and the original IBM PC's. It was, of course, character based, like DOS. It was also used on the early Apple computers.
